Hi all,
Here is what I found out.
The nearest Lowe's is in Union, 1721 Morris Ave 07083, phone
908-774-4240.
Lowe's corporate does a lot of community things, and they partner with
The Nature Conservancy, so I think there is potential here for
sponsorship of our garden.
I was not able to get thru to talk to the person who makes these
decisions. I was told we had to send a letter on letterhead to "Store
Manager" at the above address.

If someone can make up a letter head, I'll write the letter. It might
be easier to bypass the bureaucracy if anyone wants to go in person.
Someone can also drop the letter off in person.

I know we are in a hurry for tools, lumber etc, so once the letter is
either mailed or delivered, I'll call and follow-up.

If we write a letter I would suggest mentioning:
-Greater Newark Conservancy
-The Garden Lay-out plan that was so good, someone wants to copy it.
-request by NCC to help them plan a garden
-help from Newark city hall
-reach-out to the community, in English and Spanish, and their
participation
-plans for greenhouse and solar
-taking care of issue of soil contamination
-working with organizers from Jersey city

** I am familiar with a lot of community gardens, and not a one comes
close to this one, in terms of input, organization, ability, positive
feed-back.
so I would suggest to Lowe's that they would want to sponsor us, and
also maybe make us a story that they write about on their corporate
page bec. we are very unusual and comparehensive in vision!

I wish I had thot of this earlier, but I think not too late to get
their help.

Let me know how you want me or us to proceed.
Also what to request.

thanks,
ellen

This is great, Ellen. Please draft a letter :-) I've attached a basic letterhead that you can use, but feel free to make changes to it if you like. Also, I used my P.O. Box here in Newark, but if you want to change the address feel free to do so. Also, since you're facilitating this it may be best to use your phone number and email address in the letter.

wow that's a beautiful logo.
Tobias- would you want to add Science and Sustainability "Group" or
"Organization"?
I think that would make it clearer that we are an org.

ok, I'll draft a letter and post it here-
and yeah I'll be the contact.

Can you give me an idea of what to ask for-
tools,
someone had mentioned a shed- lumber for the shed.

I remember someone mentioned cedar wood - what was that for- do we
want untreated wood for planting? for the shed what kind of wood?

I can come up with a list of garden tools, but what else?
Tobias, did you need a lock for the gate or have you got that?

mulch?

ok, going to work on letter...

Newark's Science & Sustainability Working Group is the correct name. We are in fact a working group that does beautiful work, I must add. :-)

Things that are needed that won't necessarily come from GNC are as follows:

1.) A storage shed for tools and equipment that can be locked away when not being used.

2.) Any related gardening tools such as shovels, rakes, weed wacker, etc.

3.) Lumber to assist with the building of a platform for four 55-gallon rain barrels

4.) Landscaping plastic

5.) A wooden fence for the rear of the lot to separate from our neighbors for security purposes
