Dear Public Square Amplified reader,

Happy New Year!

I want to thank each of you for the very act of choosing Public Square Amplified for your support of local nonprofit news.

Public Square Amplified launched in September 2021 with a small team of volunteers and a handful of supporters, you. Your investment in us says you believe in our vision of building a larger table for journalists of color to publish stories that interrogate the spaces we all occupy together.

As we chart our first full year of operations and celebrate this new year, we would be remiss in not acknowledging that the fourth estate is an integral part of this democracy we seek. In so doing, the workings of democracy demand an informed and engaged citizenry—a citizenry where each member has full citizenship. In a racialized democracy, it is about the stories we tell each other, stories we create about ourselves, and the stories of the othering of others. The counterbalance requires marginalized and disenfranchised voices to own the storytelling apparatus and shape our narratives if this democracy works for all of us. One that rests in the reality of who we are and not the perception constructed.

The noted writer, journalist, and philosopher Frantz Fanon stated, "In the World through which I travel, I am endlessly recreating myself". Public Square Amplified is committed to such a world for citizen journalists.

Please continue to share our news, invite others to our website, send us story ideas, and continue to be fierce partners.

Thank you!

In solidarity,
