Hi all,
below is the draft of a press release.
pls read carefully and give me any comments, changes, corrections,
etc.
~~~
Some of my comments and questions and suggestions re the press release
and the event:
1. Do we want to have food & drink?
2. Time? I put 1:00. we can decide that.
***3. Note my statement in 1st para - re "come learn about..."
Do we want this in? Would people want to commit to talking about these
ideas, or it could be less formal, we are just there to answer
questions....
4. I think Tobias should invite Carol Harris, and also the other
people from the "adopt-a-lot" program.
Should we invite a "politician"? Are there any council people that are
good?
I think we should invite Brad of Greater Newark conservancy (GNC), or
someone from that org. They deserve a public thank-you.
5. Once the press release is finalized, I suggest asking GNC to
forward the press release to their list which is probably big. I don't
know if they do that kind of thing but we could ask.
6. I will send the p.r. to the Orange org. that is gardening and ask
them to attend. I will also send it to invite Pat Kenschaft to the
event. She has a very active list of gardeners, Occupiers and
environmentalists in Montclair area.
I suggest everyone think of who they could send it to that is involved
in urban gardening. This could be a good networking event.
[of course if it gets too big we might run out of food and drink,
haha]
7. I will send p.r. to the Star-Ledger - both their regular contact
for press releases and to the gardening section, which appears every
Thursday.
***Pls let me know of any other sources. For ex, there are Spanish
language tv and radio serving Newark- or any other place that you
think would be good to send. If you tell me who, I will send.
thanks,
ellen,
and thanks to Tobias for dealing with that guy who thinks he owns our
lot. Hmmph!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
"Urban Garden in Newark has Varied Goals"
On Saturday, June 16th, at 1:00 pm,  "The People's Garden" cuts the
ribbon on their new urban garden at 86 1/2 Garside Street, Newark.
All are welcome.  {Come meet your neighbors and learn about solar
energy, hydroponics, sustainable urban gardening.} See the beautiful
raised beds and rain barrels provided by the Greater Newark
Conservancy. {Food and drinks will be available.}
The People's Garden is a project of Newark Science & Sustainability
Working Group (SAS). The mission of SAS is to teach about renewal
energy, hydroponic and organic gardening. SAS believes that the
benefits of fresh, organic food should be available to all people;
hence the location of the garden in a low-income Newark neighborhood.
The 50 x 100 feet lot was leased from the city of Newark through the
"Adopt-A-Lot" program.
One goal of SAS's People's Garden is to serve as a model for other
urban gardens. The Garden began in February with a professional design
by one of the SAS members. In keeping with the mission of interacting
with the community, SAS members have made contacts to collaborate with
other urban gardens and with local community organizations. A valuable
collaboration was established when the Garden was visited by urban
gardeners from Jersey City, and from other Newark gardens. SAS members
look forward to exchanging information and ideas with the community
members relating to sustainability and how we live on this earth. As
an indication of the impact of the garden on the larger Newark
community, the garden designer was asked to help another community
organization design their garden.
An important goal of the Garden project is to welcome all who wish to
participate, particularly people from the surrounding neighborhood.
 Some neighbors have already joined the original group, pulling weeds,
and breaking up the soil with great enthusiasm, and adding to the
diversity of the original group. Since the garden is in a largely
Spanish-speaking neighborhood, brochures and talks will be in Spanish
and English.
[quotes].
Everyone is invited to join the ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebrate
this innovative garden endeavor with your friends and neighbors.
from my experience it is preferable to run out of food than to have to
take home stale leftovers.
Thanks for this Ellen. I printed this all out and will give it a closer look. Also, feel free to use my cell number and email address. No problem with that.
By the way, Dina is really doing a great job with our Blog. She stated that she will be sharing it with the group by the end of the week.
Also, Maya created our Twitter page. We need to start using this and displaying this wherever we can. Please follow us on Twiiter: https://twitter.com/#!/Occupy_Sustain
Also, Maya, did you create a Facebook page for us. We need to establish a Facebook page, especially for announcing our events. We can also add relevent videos to this page once created.
Dina please make sure links to our Twitter and Facebook pages are added to the blog.
I have friends who can edit our video footage. I also want to put together a mini-documentary about SAS. Anyone is more than welcome to work with me on developing this project.
Tobias,
let's hold off with sending the press release until we know the
outcome of the negotiations Carol is holding with the owner.
I agree. I will still look over it. We can keep it as a template for now. Please keep in mind that the creation of community gardens is not all of what we do or who we are :-) But I hear you loud and clear. Let's see what the universe have instore for us :-)
Don't get sad Evelyn get mad, but let's direct our frustration to become even more creative. We will have our community garden on Garside St. I will reach out to Carol for an update, but for now we will continue to move onward and upward.
I will give you a call.
"The people united will never be defeated!"
Hi Eveln,
Don't give up. I'm pretty sure one or the other we will be planting
flowers and vegetables. You are so much help! I appreciate you.
