About First Friends

First Friends of New Jersey and New York is a not-for-profit 501 (c ) (3) organization whose mission is to uphold the inherent dignity and humanity of detained immigrants and asylum seekers. We provide compassion and hope through volunteer visitation, resettlement, and advocacy.

First Friends was launched in 1997 by a small group of volunteers who provided pastoral care and social services to detainees. Over the past twenty years we have expanded our visitation program to include four detention centers in the NYC area, developed our community supported post release program that now supports seventy-five released detainees and expanded our advocacy efforts for detained immigrants. Our paid staff includes two full-time positions, a post release director and visitation director, and a part-time office manager who tirelessly work to fulfill our mission. We have over two hundred dedicated volunteers who visit detainees, organize events to raise awareness of detention and fundraise, and assist with post release detainees.
