Whole Cities Foundation next 3-year commitment to the city of Newark. What does that look like?

Whole Cities began working with Newark based organizations in 2017, and since then we’ve invested over $1 million with 29 nonprofits to expand access to long term healthy food and nutrition education. We believe no one knows the barriers to healthy food access or the most effective solutions better than the communities who face these realities every day, and we trust the experts- community members- to tell us how to best invest our funds. This is why the Newark Fresh, Healthy Food Access grant partners are chosen in partnership with a group of Newark residents each year and why our focus is on funding locally led organizations with broad community support. We plan our funding out in 3-year commitments.

We’ve had the honor of partnering with Newarkers the past 6 years, and we’re looking forward to making another 3-year commitment of our grant funds for 2023-2025. To do so, we’re asking for feedback on what shape our programs should take going forward.

Things that will stay the same:

  • Our Scope: In order to stay laser focused expanding access to long term healthy food and nutrition education, we don’t fund hunger alleviation efforts, fitness programs, arts programs, and most school-based initiatives.
  • Our Funding: We have a little bit of flexibility but do not have unlimited funding. We currently allocate approximately $184,000 per year to our support for Newark initiatives ($150,000 to the Newark Fresh, Healthy Food Access Grant, $30,000to the NCFS, and $4,000 to Garden Hours).
  • OurFlexibility: We continually ask our partners for feedback and make updates to our support- not just at the beginning of every 3-year commitment. For Instance, when several partners expressed an interest in having one on one support, we started the “Garden Hours.”

While we see every 3-year commitment as an opportunity to pause, reflect, and improve, we strive to continually offer responsive support. If you think of an amazing idea in a year that we should implement, we’re all ears!

Hope all is well with everyone and looking forward to this evening's discussion with folks from Whole Cities Foundation. You definitely don't get many funders seeking feedback directly from the community, which is awesome.
