Hello Sustainable Food System champions & friends of the Newark Office of Sustainability,

I am happy to share that we have a special guest visiting with partners of the City of Newark Office of Sustainability next Tuesday, Mr. Mark Winne, author of Stand Together or Starve Alone, Food Town USA, and Closing the Food Gap: Resetting the Table in the Land of Plenty.

Mark is widely regarded as the “father” of the food policy councils, and currently serves as Senior Policy Advisor for the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future (the folks who maintain the database of food policy councils across the country). As the Office of Sustainability reached out to subject matter experts and my counterparts from cities across the country, Mark’s name came up as a key resource while Newark is considering our next steps. Mark was kind enough to reach out when he knew he had a trip planned to the NYC area, and I’m happy to report that he will be leading a book reading and community conversation next Tuesday night, from 530-7pm here in Newark City Hall.

Kindly help spread the word – please see attached flier and/or share event via Facebook using this link

WHO: Author and Senior Policy Advisor Mark Winne, with introduction by Chief Sustainability Officer Nathaly Agosto Filión

WHAT: A book reading and community conversation about Newark’s Food Future

WHEN: Tuesday, September 24th, from 530pm-7pm

WHERE: Newark City Hall, 920 Broad Street, First Floor Rotunda (after 5pm, all visitors must use employee’s entrance on Green Street)

WHY: In the City’s Sustainability Action Plan 2020, we commit to convening a Food Policy Council tasked with identifying promising opportunities to advance resident access to affordable fresh food, food-related entrepreneurship, and successful urban agriculture projects. The Office of Sustainability has brought together dozens of stakeholders committees dedicated to work around Green Space Policy, Healthy Meals, and Buying Club/Inventory (meeting notes and resources can be found here). We are now working to develop a “Sustainable Food System Blueprint for Action”. We hope this book reading and community conversation can bring a bit of inspiration about what’s possible by learning from the work of innovative food cities across the country.

Thank you all,

Nathaly Agosto Filión
