Hi Tobias!
I hope you're doing well. As you may know, the Kuehne Chemical Facility in Kearny is currently undergoing the EJ Law process. They have held their EJ Hearing and the comment deadline closes on 1/16.
A bit about the facility: The Kuehne Company in Kearny is a chlorine and bleach manufacturer that has applied to DEP to modify its air pollution permit. Under New Jersey's environmental justice law, Kuehne is required to find and suggest ways to reduce its air pollution emissions. Instead of giving a detailed analysis of proven ways to reduce emissions like using electric instead of fossil fuel boilers, Kuehne summarily said that it has done all it can and will not make any further changes.
There are two methods of engagement that NJEJA is working on:
(1) We have drafted a letter to Kuehne regarding their permit application and Environmental Justice Impact Statement. I would welcome your organization's sign-on on these comments if you agree and support our comments. Please let me know by 1/15 if you would like to sign-on.
(2) We have created a FastAction
form for residents in Kearny and surrounding communities to use to submit a comment. By submitting this form, residents will be directly emailing the Kuehne facility (email stated in their EJIS) as well as DEP staff Commissioner Shawn LaTourette, Kandyce Perry, and David Pepe. Those filling out the form are welcome to use the template that we provide in the form or edit and utilize the form to address their own concerns/recommendations. If you have capacity and interest, I welcome you sharing it with your network.
Thank you so much for considering this request!
Best,
Brooke
