Re:
U.S. meat haulers continue to flout border rules, MP says, March 30.
I would like to set the record straight concerning the article.
Canada has a strong meat inspection system and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency verifies that food, whether domestic or imported, is safe.
As part of our continued efforts to improve our food safety system, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency implemented a change in policy to randomly inspect U.S. trucks when they arrive at the border instead of giving them advanced notice.
The CFIA has also increased inspection presence in all federally registered plants, whether they ship domestically or internationally.
The CFIA has received an additional investment of $13 million from the government of Canada to hire 100 new inspectors to respond to this change.
This builds on the $75 million that the Government of Canada has allocated to move forward on all 57 recommendations of the Weatherill report and hire 70 meat inspectors. From March 2006 to March 2009, the number of CFIA inspectors has increased by 445.
The CFIA continues to work with our federal and provincial partners to continually improve our food inspection systems to address challenges.
