It’s Good Friday, but Easter’s coming!
PAAS? Recognize the word? The original PAAS Easter egg dye company was invented by an American named William Townley. Mr. Townley owned a drug store in Newark, New Jersey, where he dreamed up recipes for home products. In the late 1880s, he figured out how to dye Easter eggs in five colors. In 1880 neighborhood families started buying Townley’s Easter Egg Dye packets for five cents. Take out the tablets and drop them into a water and white vinegar mixture for a perfect egg dye.
Soon enough Mr, Townley realized that he had a product that might have an appeal far beyond his neighborhood. He renamed his business the PAAS Dye Company. The name PAAS comes from “Passen”, the word his Pennsylvania Dutch neighbors used for Easter.
Today, Americans purchase more than 10 million PAAS Easter Egg Color Kits during Easter season and decorate as many as 180 million eggs. They have even added an App for digital egg-dying. Try PAAS/Heinz Free IPAD App. (No guarantees from me).
The Easter egg is a symbol for a miracle. Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem was to celebrate Passover in the Holy City. The Lord’s Supper was a Passover Seder. One of the ritual foods on everyone’s Passover plate was a hard-boiled egg, symbol of the “chagigah”, a ritual sacrifice made in the temple. After the destruction of the temple, this egg became a mourner’s reminder. The temple sacrifice could no longer be made, because there was no longer a temple. Following the resurrection of Christ, the brightly colored egg has become a symbol of hope, of new life.
