The ASPN is the leading voice of pediatric nephrology in North America. Our primary goal is to advance care for children, adolescents, and young adults with kidney disease through advocacy, education, research, and workforce development.
ASPN has always valued and been strengthened by the diversity of our pediatric nephrology community. As we all move forward to work to overcome the challenges that still exist to create a more just and equitable nation, ASPN will continue to promote tolerance and pluralism within our community.
We were ranked among the top 50 providers for nephrology in the 2014-15 Best Children's Hospitals rankings in U.S. News & World Report. We are the only Suffolk County hospital to perform renal transplants and dialysis for children, and one of the largest pediatric nephrology programs on Long Island, seeing approximately 1,400 patients annually.
Children seen as outpatients are evaluated in the welcoming, friendly environment of the pediatric subspecialty clinic in the Yawkey Center on the Massachusetts General Hospital Main Campus or at one of our satellite locations throughout the area. Our location within a world-renowned academic medical center allows access to the experienced subspecialists and the cutting-edge technology at Mass General.
Hypertension Clinic: The Pediatric Hypertension Clinic at MGfC offers comprehensive evaluation and management of children with all causes of hypertension. We have a full consultative team including members of the cardiology, gastroenterology and nutrition units. We offer 24-hour ambulatory blood-pressure monitoring and echocardiography, as well as angiographic imaging when needed. Children with hypertension are more likely to have kidney conditions that cause high blood pressure and need a more detailed diagnostic evaluation than adults in order to understand and treat their high blood pressure conditions. Unfortunately, obesity can also cause high blood pressure, and the growing number of children with obesity has led to a surge in the prevalence of pediatric hypertension. Because of the association between long-term cardiovascular disease and hypertension, our approach to high blood pressure in children includes an evaluation of associated cardiovascular risk factors, such as hyperlipidemia, diabetes, obesity and family risk factors.
Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC): Our division is the primary renal referral center of The Carol and James Herscot Center for TSC at Massachusetts General Hospital. In collaboration with pediatric and adult diagnostic and interventional radiologists ,urologists, pathologists, and internists, we diagnose, monitor and treat all kidney problems of both children and adults with TSC.
All of our physicians are board-certified providers of adolescent and pediatric nephrology and hypertension. We collaborate with Pediatric Rheumatology to treat patients with kidney and rheumatologic disease and with Pediatric Urology for patients with kidney and urologic disorders.
We are actively conducting research in congenital and inherited kidney disorders, and we are working in conjunction with the Pediatric Clinical Pharmacology Program to find new treatments of pediatric and adolescent kidney disease and hypertension.
In addition to leading active research programs, our Pediatric Nephrology faculty includes several National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant winners and NIH Training Grant participants. Division faculty publish more than 10 original manuscripts per year, as well as writing reviews and chapters for key nephrology and pediatric texts. Dr. Michel Baum is editor-in-chief of the journal Pediatric Nephrology.
Pediatric nephrology fellows, residents, and medical students all benefit from the academic excellence and leadership embodied by our faculty. Our Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship Program ensures that fellows effectively evaluate and manage patients. Much of the success of this program relies on faculty providing one-on-one teaching and delivering valuable didactic lectures in clinical nephrology.
The goal of our Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship Program is to train postdoctoral fellows for careers in academic pediatric nephrology. The Program trains fellows to evaluate and manage patients with fluid and electrolyte disorders and renal disease. Didactic and one-on-one teaching provide a strong clinical foundation. Our Fellowship is one of only a handful of programs funded by a National Institutes of Health T32 grant.
At the Renown Children's Hospital, we are deeply committed to the care and well-being of our young patients with kidney-related conditions. Our team of highly skilled, American Board of Pediatric Nephrology-certified pediatric nephrologists specialize in the diagnosis, treatment and management of a diverse range of kidney disorders in children.
The pediatric nephrologists at MaineHealth treat children with kidney problems and kidney diseases. They treat the full range of kidney conditions in children, from birth defects to endocrine and metabolic disorders.
The Division of Pediatric Nephrology specializes in the diagnosis and management of children with a variety of acute and chronic kidney-related disorders. The division evaluates and treats hypertension, hematuria, proteinuria, renal tubular acidosis, nephrolithiasis, glomerulonephritis and kidney failure. It also provides comprehensive care for pediatric patients with end-stage kidney disease, including care to patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis and follow-up care after kidney transplantation.
The division is committed to performing research in an effort to improve treatment and outcomes in pediatric patients with advanced kidney disease. Faculty members have diverse research interests and are involved in a number of studies that evaluate various aspects of care provided to children with kidney disease.
Our pediatric nephrologists actively conduct clinical trials and research studies, in collaboration with our colleagues at Brenner and at other institutions throughout the United States, to search for new and better ways to care for pediatric patients and improve their health outcomes.
Our stand-alone pediatric dialysis clinic is one of the largest in the country, and offers hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. A multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, social workers and kidney dietitians work together to provide exceptional care for children who are experiencing kidney failure.
Our program is focused on training pediatric nephrologists to be exceptional clinicians, dedicated educators, informed researchers, and leaders within the realm of pediatrics. This is achieved by our combination of a robust clinical inpatient and outpatient practice, access to educational and research opportunities throughout the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, commitment to collaborative relationships with other pediatric and adult subspecialists, while maintaining a tight-knit relationship within the Division.
As the Division provides primary pediatric nephrology care for portions of four states, and specialized care for an even larger section of the Southeastern United States, our fellows will be exposed to a wide variety of pediatric nephrology conditions, both during in-patient and out-patient clinical services. Currently, there is a very active clinical pediatric nephrology practice including, but not limited to:
Educational opportunities throughout the Medical Center are available to our fellows. This includes access to organized lectures provided by the Divisions of Nephrology and Pediatric Nephrology as well as the Department of Pediatrics, given by established clinicians and researchers in their fields. Our preeminent Division of Renal Pathology provides weekly case conferences in addition to in-person review of specimens. Our Division's relationships also extend beyond the lecture hall with close clinical collaboration with other pediatric sub-specialists, pediatric surgeons, pediatric urologists, and other house staff to enhance the trainee's experience both as a subspecialist and a team member.
Since 2011, our pediatric kidney center has helped infants, children and adolescents receive accurate diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of kidney conditions. We specialize in helping the smallest of patients with end-stage kidney disease, metabolic bone disease, acute kidney failure in newborns, obesity-related kidney disorders, systemic lupus nephritis, kidney transplantation and more.

As a Center of Excellence in Transplantation, we are one of the most sought after pediatric kidney transplant centers in the country. During the past five years, we provided kidney transplants to nearly twice as many children as any other New York hospital, and, even more significant, the outcomes of those transplants were superior, as verified by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. We offer fast appointments and a streamlined consultation process for our patients and physicians.
