Yes, OMNeT++ is definitely a great tool. But can you be more concise
with what you have in mind? Doing research in optical networks is such a
broad area... At what level (network layers) do you want to address the
area? Are you more interested in things like routing, switching, and
some kind of performance evaluation in the context of a certain optical
network architecture, or are you interested in the internals of some
optical components of the network and things like regions of low
attenuation and eye diagrams?... This is because in the former omnet can
be used in the optical networks area like it is used in any other
network area, and I am sure it can help you a lot in your research.
However, in the later, (I think) maybe you should consider a different
kind of tool. Just remember that omnet is a generic and flexible
discrete event environment for simulations that you can use to build
your own simulation models, and this of course includes optical
networks. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your comment
Let me be frankly open and hope you can help . Im recent graduate from
Dar es saalam university here in Tanzania majoring Electronics and
communication science and now im working at University of Dodoma as a
Tutorial assistant. Yes optical network has been area of my interest
in doing research. And since i havent done any research yet i need
somebody who can guide me in identifying a suitable area in the
subject for research and give me fundamentals guideline. please if you
can help show me a way through
Thank you

Hello,

I am a Graduate student and i am using OMNeT++ for some research work in Optical Networks field.
Ok I just started using this tool and its a great one, but still i believe there is a lot more to explore.
I want to establish a light path between nodes, something like 4 nodes and 3 light paths. I will be using this for my future work and indirectly helps in the interaction between layer 2 and layer 3.
please let me know how do i establish this particular network on OMNeT++ tool?

Thanks,
Srinath

Well guys, I just want to know optical network support in OMNeT++. I am interested in routing and switching, which model I have to use PhotonicSim or etc if you are familiar do let me know.
