Hi,

So I am looking to run simulations of VANETs just to do a simple project on comparing routing protocols and what ones are best in certain situations like highways and things like that.

I was looking at the http://veins.car2x.org/tutorial/ site to see how to install the various things that are needed for VEINS but it starts off saying that the best thing to use is Linux but then it seems to have file paths for Windows and it has Python commands taking into account the path for windows. Now I realise I could just change the initial path section but will the rest of the command work in Linux? Also what is the best location to install the applications like SUMO etc? Does the installer choose the directory it goes into?

If anyone knows of a decent installation guide video or if anyone has a bit more information relating to my questions I would be really grateful.

Lastly, where is the best place to find simulation files that would have the likes of routing protocols DSR, AODV etc that I could compare? I am sure this sort of work has already been done before.

Thanks in advance.

The beginner's tutorial is written for Windows because I am receiving
the majority of beginners' questions (How do I run a program? What does
a linker do?) from Windows users.

Veins is developed almost exclusively on Linux and Mac OS X. If at all
possible, I would install Linux on the development machine, or in a
virtual machine, and use this for writing simulation models.

It will make debugging, finding memory problems and leaks, performance
analysis, and distributed execution of simulations so much easier.

Best,

Christoph

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for getting back to me, I really appreciate it.

I ran through the install steps on my windows machine today and I have a better understanding of how SUMO, Omnett and VEINS integrate now, so I think I will try again with Linux as I had some issues when running the veins omnett.ppi programme.

Lastly, do you know if there is anywhere that I could get a hold off simulations that have already been done with regards to comparing routing protocols such as AODV and DSR for use in VANETS? I am doing this as my dissertation project and for various reasons outwith my control I am miles behind and don't have the time to learn how to make them all up myself. Any help/guidance would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks

Fraser

Hi Chris,

I was wondering if you could please tell how fix the following error.

Error in module (Veins::TraCIScenarioManagerLaunchd) RSUExampleScenario.manager (id=6) at event #1, t=0: Could not connect to TraCI server. Make sure it is running and not behind a firewall. Error message: 111: Connection refused.

thanks

The simplest path to getting a simulation running is documented in the
Veins tutorial: http://veins.car2x.org/tutorial/

I tried the tutorial provided in veins website and failed. I was operating on windows 10. My question is, is veins works better in windows 7 or in ubuntu-16.04?
