It is not compulsory you instal the INET frame work. But as well you will have to be prepared for the rigorous task of having to do everything your self. By that you are heading towards building a new platform for your adhoc network simulation!

By using INET you do not need to re-invent wheel again and again.
everything you need for ad hoc is available even if you want
transmit real video .
Also you can use MIXIM, but I suggest you INETMANET.
