What are RoutingProtocolBase and NetfilterBase::HookBase clases for?

I have to make a MANET routing protocol using INET, so I was looking at the code of GPSR, DSDV and DYMO, and I noticed they inherit from the classes RoutingProtocolBase and NetfilterBase::HookBase, so I infered I'll hav to use them to. I started looking at the code of these classes, but it is not very intuitive for me. Can anyone tell me how to use these classes?
