Gallifrey was an ongoing series produced by Big Finish Productions centring on Gallifrey and its affairs, both internal and external. As of September 2023[update], fifteen series have been released.
The main focus of the story was split between Lady President Romana, as portrayed by Lalla Ward, and Leela, as portrayed by Louise Jameson. It also featured the return of Mary Tamm as Romana's first incarnation and the introduction of Juliet Landau as a new incarnation.
The first three series took the form of single releases. Beginning with the fourth series, Gallifrey moved to a boxset format. Series seven and eight saw another format change, each consisting of a single, longer story.
Scott Handcock, producer of Gallifrey, originally thought Enemy Lines, which comprised the eighth series of Gallifrey, would be the end for the audio series, as it "had always been flirting around the edges of the Time War without ever addressing it, so [he] struggled to see what [they] could do to feel fresh without tackling the Time War head-on". (VOR 108) Therefore, the next release, Time War: Volume One saw the return of the boxset format and began Gallifrey: Time War, a subseries focused on the eponymous conflict, which was followed by Gallifrey: War Room, focusing on the War effort after events of Time War: Volume Four.
Tales of intrigue and political manoeuvring from the seat of Time Lord power. Join Romana, Leela and K9 as they find enemies on all sides in a delicate game with the fate of Gallifrey hanging in the balance.
Following the broadcast of The Invasion of Time in 1978, Gary Russell read an idea in a fanzine about a whole series being set on Gallifrey starring the Fourth Doctor and a rotating cast of supporting characters and kept this in mind. In 2003, Russell worked with Lalla Ward, Louise Jameson, John Leeson and Alan Barnes on Big Finish's Zagreus, amongst whom there was discussion about the potential of the characters of Romana II, Leela and K9 which led to the creation of Gallifrey. In 2012, Big Finish Productions began producing audio dramas featuring Doctor Who's fourth Doctor, as portrayed by Tom Baker.[1] Baker had previously declined to feature in any Big Finish releases, but after recording a trilogy of full cast audio boxsets for BBC Audiobooks, he decided to participate.[2] This was also part of a spin off series of the Monthly range.
This series of adventures is set between seasons 16 and 17 of the classic series, and features Mary Tamm and John Leeson reprising their roles as Romana and K9; this was Tamm's final role, as she died in 2012 after recording her parts.[5]
This series of adventures, like Season 1, is set between seasons 14 and 15 of the classic series and features Jameson reprising her role as Leela. Chronologically, it takes place after The Oseidon Adventure and the special Night of the Stormcrow.[6]
A fifth series of adventures was released from January 2016, this time featuring Lalla Ward as the second incarnation of Romana and John Leeson as K9. The stories are set between seasons 17 and 18 of the classic series.
A sixth series was released beginning in January 2017, also featuring Lalla Ward as the second incarnation of Romana and John Leeson as K9. The stories are set during season 18 of the classic series, prior to that season's E-Space trilogy.
A seventh series was released from January 2018, featuring Louise Jameson as Leela and John Leeson as K9. The stories are set after Season 4, during season 15 of the classic series. This is the first season to be released in 2 separate box sets rather than a new release every month. The final two stories feature Sutekh, a character based upon the Egyptian deity of the same name. Gabriel Woolf reprises his portrayal of Sutekh; Woolf had appeared as the character in the classic Doctor Who serial "Pyramids Of Mars".
An eighth series was released from January 2019, featuring John Leeson as K9 and a new companion WPC Ann Kelso played by Jane Slavin. The stories are set in between series 15 and 16 and are collectively titled The Syndicate Master Plan.
A ninth series was released from January 2020, featuring Lalla Ward as Romana II, John Leeson as K9 and Matthew Waterhouse as Adric. The stories are set in Season 18 during the E-Space Trilogy, specifically set between the stories State of Decay and Warriors' Gate. The format of the series changed from two box sets of four one hour stories, to two box sets of two two hour stories. A special, featuring Louise Jameson as Leela and John Leeson as K9 was released in May 2020, which is set between the stories Underworld and The Invasion of Time.
An eleventh series was released from January 2022, featuring the first appearance of Nerys Hughes as new companion Margaret. The stories will be set during season 14 of the classic series, specifically between The Deadly Assassin and The Face of Evil.
A thirteenth series will be released from March 2024 in three volumes, featuring Christopher Naylor as Harry Sullivan and Eleanor Crooks as Naomi Cross. It will be connected with UNIT: Nemesis.[11]
On the 23rd of May 2024, Big Finish Scheduled three box sets for release for March,[14] June,[15] and September 2025,[16] respectively. Senior Producer John Ainsworth said: Long-term listeners will know that we record Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor Adventures well in advance, but there might be some surprises on the way.[17]
