Hi Joe,
We are also using Omeka for our Special Collections and it is great for online content. However, we did not select it for our DAMS. Mostly because you need to put in place rules around how you will manage each digital object and report on technical information about the files. This is not what Omeka does. We are implementing the Islandora/Fedora Commons application instead for the DAMS. We also use DSpace as an institutional repository and if you were looking for our easier to install option for managing files I think DSpace is closer to a DAMS than Omeka. Feel free to contact me directly if you want to see some of our DAMS requirements.
Saying all of this I know Omeka has a plugin that works with Fedora, and maybe that combination might get it a little closer as a potential DAMS, but I have not looked into this very closely (yet).
Kind regards,
Allison
