Hi,

Recent news has it that the Java version shipped by Apple on its
computers is to be deprecated. The news is not clear and it is too
soon to tell what the outcome will be. But I think it means at least
that the current integration of Java applications on OS X is going to
disappear and there is nothing that can replace it yet, except for
using X11 support on OS X (not so nice).

Focus on the "yet" here because there is already SoyLatte (X11) and
maybe Oracle will start supporting OS X through the standard version
of Java. No way to tell and it could be months before any real
information is available.

In any event it looks like problems for running Java applications like
OmegaT+ in the future.

You may want to consider using VirtualBox to run Linux or Windows to
have Java applications supported in the future. I have used it myself
for testing of OmegaT+ (on Mac) and it works fine and is free.

Hi Raymond,

Does this mean that there wil be no Java interpreter for Mac or just that users will have to download and install the latest version on their own?

Will we be porting omegat+ to another language then???

A Q,

It is impossible to say whether there will or will not be an
integrated Java for Mac at this point. There are already alternatives
in the form of OpenJDK and SoyLatte, but these provide only X11 based
GUI, not Aqua. It would be a large effort for anyone to develop the
required integration into Aqua and Apple is not saying anything about
what it is doing yet.

What may occur, and it seems highly likely, is that Java will not come
preinstalled on new versions of Mac OS X (10.7, Lion).

So as I mentioned, it is too soon to tell what will happen. I am
keeping my eye on the situation and considering my options going
forward.
Needless to say, porting OmegaT+ to another language would be a major
effort. I am going to explore other possibilities before doing that if
a proper Java is not forthcoming from some other vendor.

Anyway, it will be months, at least, before this would have any
adverse effects. There is time to take some action.

Oh, I see,

Do you have  the source for this information? I'd like to read their rationale behind that, if any. I think this would be a crazy move from apple if they actually did that. You know, Mac is famous for being the easiest and most user friendly OS out there, if they do that it will be a little less easier as users would have to install java on their own, and Mac users are not exactly skilled with those things.

Well this information was included with the latest release of Java on
Mac just this past week as part of the release notes. To which many
Java developers on the Apple Java developer's mailing list were very
upset. So you can read all that on Apple's mailing list or through the
documentation somewhere.

The only rationale given is that the other operating systems have Java
directly from Oracle(Sun) and Apple's is often out of date with it, so
there has to be a better way (quoting Steve Jobs here). What that
means exactly is never stated, in typical Apple fashion. So just hurry
up and wait in other words!

It definitely be less easy to go with Java applications on Mac after
this, but everyone else has to do this. Plus, Apple is even
disallowing any Java application from their online app stores. They
seem to really want to go against Java now, probably has something to
do with Android/Linux using Java and iPhone not.

Oh, I see...

Yep, that must be the reason. But I don't think they are as stupid as to cause the entire Mac community to be isolated from the rest of the computer world by removing or preventing Java from being used on Mac. Most likely they'll just leave it up to user whether they want to install or not.

Ok, thanks for the info.

See you
