Crashplan and backup options

Crashplan, the online backup service I’ve been using for the last few years, is shutting down its home-user service and I’ve got a year to find a replacement. They’re pushing their users to switch to Carbonite, with a pretty good discount for the first year, but I want to look at all my options. I’m looking for possible alternatives, from anyone caught in the same situation or currently using a competitor. Crashplan was originally noteworthy for its unlimited storage, overkill encryption, and fair price.
I’m mainly looking for continuous, automatic, offsite backup for ~$5 per month. I’m willing to entertain other options, but they can’t require a bunch of manual intervention, Linux, or a personally-owned offsite computer. Bonus points for Synology integration, as I may be moving that way in the future.
To make it a broader discussion, what’s everyone else doing for backup more robust than “I have a spare external hard drive which probably has copies of most of my stuff”?

Only you would run Veeam at home... That said, this plus Synology plus Glacier might not be terrible, if it can deal wit incremental backups in a sane way.Generally speaking, +1 for Veeam.

I did a bit more research last night, and at the moment I’m leaning towards Backblaze. They seem comparable to everyone else in pricing and features, but they also share a lot more about their inner workings than some other companies. Their annual-ish hard drive reliability reports are fascinating. They also provide all tiers of customer with the option for sneakernet restore on either flash drive or hard drive.
They’ve got Synology integration with their separate B2 service, which drops some of the features of the main service in exchange for being more versatile. It’s priced per GB stored and restored, rather than flat rate, but you’d have to upload a terabyte to break even on the monthly cost and I’m not too worried about spending a few bucks to restore.

Yes, a DiskStation – but in my case it’s not any kind of backup system, it’s just storage. None of my computers have a ton of local storage; all my important and large files are stored on a file server on the network and accessed through mapped drives. Right now this is a desktop PC in the basement with a RAID array, which not only stores all my files but also runs my online backup service. This works great; RAID gives me local fault tolerance and the cloud service provides backups for all my computers from a single location and license.
I’ve gotten tired of tinkering with that desktop and in the future intend to switch to a DiskStation. To fully replace the current system, the DiskStation will need to run the backup service, so it’s a shopping criteria.

The primary defense against that attack is scale.
Sure, if someone wanted to target a particular user's data, it could maybe be broken (given enough time and GPUs) , but each individual user is just one small fish in a very, very large ocean.

In addition to Kevin’s comments about obscurity, well-encrypted files aren’t quite as susceptible to attack as, say, account passwords.
First, in order to even have a chance of success, the attacker needs to have a local copy of some of the data – a web service just isn’t fast enough to brute-force a serious password, even if the service doesn’t limit you after a certain number of failures. To some extent I’m trusting Crashplan or whoever to have good enough physical and network security to keep my encrypted archive out of unfamiliar hands, but the obscurity comes in to play there as well.
Once an attacker does get a copy of my data, then I suppose we can worry about GPU attacks. But Crashplan, and probably other services, let you set things up with a custom encryption key, rather than a normal password to unlock a key stored on their servers. That means an attacker isn’t guessing a password of unknown but probably small bit depth, they’re guessing a 448-bit encryption key directly. That’s 2^448 possible keys to try.
Warning to anyone who knows anything about cryptography: I don’t. Don’t take the following too seriously. It’s almost certainly full of errors and bad assumptions, but I suspect I haven’t gotten it wrong by nearly enough to change the outcome.
Crashplan uses Blowfish, which happens to be rather slow, even on GPUs. Benchmarks for this sort of thing are rare, but it looks like a single system using eight, GTX1080 cards can test around 100,000 keys per second. That’s 3e12 keys per year, and on average an attacker might need to test half the keyspace, 3.6e134 keys, before they find the correct key. If every single one of the 7 billion people on earth owns such an 8-GPU system and works together, they’ll be able to test 2.2e22 keys per year. At that rate they’ll need 1.6e112 years to probably find my key. When your exponents are this big, nothing else really matters - even if a new GPU comes out with 10x the performance, it’s 1.6e111 years. That’s 160 billion times longer than the heat death of the universe.
That’s really overkill, and I suspect they did it just because they could. It looks like Backblaze uses 128-bit AES, which has both a smaller keyspace and a faster check rate; our hypothetical worldwide botnet could break that in a mere 60 trillion years.
For a realistic, real-world example, Distributed.net has spent the last 15 years running a voluntary botnet in an attempt to brute-force RC5 encryption with a mere 72-bit keyspace. They don’t have many recent benchmarks for individual hardware, but out of their 1,500 current participants there are likely to be a few GTX1080 cards. They’re collectively checking 800 million keys per second, and ought to be done in another hundred years at the current rate, although I suspect hardware improvements will let them finish sometime in the next decade or so.
In all of these examples, the data is a lot safer on a server somewhere than sitting unencrypted on a hard drive in my house, behind a locked wooden door and guarded by a friendly spaniel.

Ultimately, the reason I use online backup is a combination of your points about proximity and currency. I don’t think it’s crazy to say that my data would be among the least replaceable of my possessions to be lost in a house fire, flood, or tornado, so that’s my main concern when I’m setting up backup. The fact that my cell phone knows everything about me demonstrates the level of privacy and security I’m actually willing to sacrifice for convenience – I’d by lying if I claimed to have data so important I wouldn’t sell it at any price.
For a while I did backups whenever I felt like it to an external drive, and shut it in a waterproof/fireproof safe. That handled the proximity issue in an inexpensive if not totally reliable way, but it took time to do and the backups were never very current. Switching to a continuous system fixes both those problems, but in exchange makes it much more challenging to physically protect the data at home. Getting the data off-site fixes that for less money than any kind of hardened on-site storage. Off-site means either a trusted friend’s house, or a paid service, and the paid service seems like less headache.
