I thought about messing with it a while back, but between having a laptop, DropBox, and VPN access to my server at home, I couldn't think of any use cases for myself that were compelling enough to justify it. 

It's a great idea though.

I want to quit paying for Dropbox and increase space available. I use a little over 100GB and would use more.

Looks like it's been put on a Raspberry Pi with an external USB drive. I have a RasPi and a 1.5TB sitting idle.

Just wonering if it is worth the time to get running.

Not discounting the "roll your own" aspect, but there's the PogoPlug option for $5/month (you supply the storage) and it includes clients/apps for Windows, iOS, Android, and Linux (https://pogoplug.com/downloads).

I loaded up the Raspberry Pi with the base Raspbian image and installed ownCloud. Syncing and sharing directories is fairly straight forward and it's not as slow as I thought it might be on a RasPi. The web interface seems slow and causes CPU usage to spike, but once the clients are setup there isn't much need for the web interface.

The limitations I've run across so far are files size, 2GB max, and mobile apps not having integration like they do with Dropbox. I just have to decide how important those VBox images are to being backed up.

Check out AeroFS. It's Dropbox-like, but the company doesn't store data, they just broker the transfer. So it'll sync dirs, but if you lose all the copies of the data, you're screwed.

Still worth a look, though.

I have AeroFS but haven't had a chance to try it out yet.  It took about 3 months from the time I signed up for the beta until I got my invite.  Seems pretty legit though!

I think it's the closest self-hosted direct replacement for Dropbox that you're going to run across.  If you're wanting to share your files with a lot of other people, not so much.
