I'm looking for 3 *unipolar* (6 wire) Nema 17 steppers.

I can ebay them for about $40 including shipping, anybody know of a better deal?

Oops, $50, I miscalculated shipping.

$16 each isn't bad, but I thought I'd check around.

Is there any sort of industrial surplus supply around the metro area?

The only one I know of is Surplus Center, and they don't carry stuff that small.

Based on their website or past experience?

My experience with SC is that they have whatever they've got...

I would check www.electronicsurplus.com, it’s kind of the same boat, they have what they have, but what they have is constantly changing, and I have found some amazing deals and always been treated very well when ordering from them.

They have a nice collection of steppers, but most of them are priced far out of the realm of hobby use. Looks like they are aiming mostly at the 'old machine repair' market, where the product price is controlled by the limited availability of OEM parts and the replacement cost of the machines that use them.

I recently ordered 200 pager motors from them, picked them up for 68 cents per unit, by far the best price I’ve been able to find.  I’ve also used them in the past for things like 3v hobby motors.

Bristle bots?

Bristle bots and scribble machines,  although after tinkering with the pager motors with the scribble machines I prefer using a hobby motor with a chunk of glue stick to off set it.
