As almost everyone who's been around the Makery lately knows, the "good" soldering iron at the electronics bench has died [again].  I'm disinclined to put another torch on it, if that's even the problem, and propose using the funds in the "Electronics Tool Of the Month" jar to buy a new Hakko:

It's highly reviewed and recommended by several members.

Barring objections [or someone directly supplying a similar model], I'd like to get this order in  this weekend.  The little irons we have REALLY didn't cut it for soldering on the Barbie Jeep's power connections...

I'm not sure what the exact balance of the jar is [James or Eric?], so I'm opening the floor for donations.  Anything extra will remain in the jar for the next purchase. One aside about "pass the hat": IOUs are certainly okay, but please try to make good on them in a semi-timely fashion. Thanks!

I just stopped by the Makery and threw $10 in the general donations, intended to go to the solder station.

Said General Fund has $60 in it. Which leaves $40 or so balance to fund the new iron.

The new iron has been ordered.  After some consultation, we went with the older [analog] Hakko 888, as the newer digital model has a terrible user interface (no temp-down button).  Expected receipt is either late this week or early next week.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed.

I highly recommend tips like these: http://www.qsource.com/p-332-hakko-900m-t-rt-900m-series-soldering-tip-rt.aspx?gclid=CLiG1seEtbcCFVQV7AodyiUABA great for doing and desoldering that requires the heating up of two soldering joints at once to remove a component. Also good for SMD work. They come in varying widths.

I'm not sure what the iron comes with for tips, but that particular one seems like it would be good, as you describe.  It's unfortunate, but I'm betting that none of the tips for the old iron will fit...  We'll have to see if there's any hope of modifying them to work, when the new one arrives...

That said, that particular one isn't compatible with the 888 that we ordered, so please no one rush out and order it :)
