Stopped in AT&T Friday night and they gave me a microcell for free. I'm not going to install in the house and started looking around for hacks, but haven't had much luck. I'll bring it in if there is interest.

Sincerely,
Mike

I spend way too much money per month with AT&T, so I'm considered a preferred customer.  I think they usually run $150-200 and I think Verizon has them as well.  You register up to 10 AT&T mobile numbers that can use the cell and connect it to your broadband.

Most hacks I've seen have to do with GPS so you can take it overseas.

Sincerely,
Mike

How did you manage to get one free Mike?  I'm curious about what can be done with the device.  Is it exclusive to AT&T?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a microcell is basically just a very low power GSM to VOIP (SIP?) bridge, right?  If that's true, then the possibilities are endless, really...

Endless, so long as you have open access to the hardware (read: loader
level, firmware level, and/or (if applicable) "root" level access).
That's where the real hackers do their work; gaining that access.

Do you know anything about how the device works? Is it running an OS (I
doubt it, but who knows)? Is there information available on the
hardware, e.g. bootloading scheme, firmware level (layout) details?

I haven't taken it out of the box yet and haven't found much online yet. I'll bring it in when I get a chance and we'll take it apart.

Sincerely,
Mike
