Ok, so I just got a response from red bull last night. The application was accepted and they are sending a "Bullduino" to be a part of our project.
If you google it other teams seem to have already gotten theirs and have posted details of it online. Its basically an arduino uno board clone with huge redbull logo pcb

We need to think of a project, whos only criteria is to have the bullduino be a part of it. any ideas?

Hopefully it will be here today or tomorrow, so we can play with it, but of not we can have a standard arduino stand in until it gets here.

We are supposed to have a video introducing the team, and showing off the project by the 3rd. I will probably try to get some shots of everyone that wants to join in on sunday, at the bbq. And hopefully we can get something put together.

I realize I am from lincoln,  but wouldn't mind being a part of this.  It all depends on time requirements and dates etc.
Would you be up for a lincoln maker in your group?

I suppose that whatever it is should have wings?

Hey John, Im certainly not opposed. Im assuming most of the build will be done on sunday, so if you can make it up here to help out thats great.

If anyone has a couple 4"-ish throw linear servos, we could build a set of these.

I won't be able to help in body, but maybe mind and spirit. :)

Looking for alternative "wings" ideas combined with Red Bull...

 * Wings (the band from the 70's)
 * Wings (the food)
** Can an Arduino "wing cooking timer" be created?
** How about an Arduino "hot wings" spice sensor?
 * Wings (flying)
** How about a quad-copter or some other flying machine?
** Combine it with tilt/accel sensors and a USB or BlueTooth interface and use it to fly a flight simulator.

Just some brainstorming ideas...

Ok, so the bullduino just showed up at my door a few minutes ago.
I plugged it in and its blinking away.
I doesnt seem to be sending anything out the serial port. Ill keep poking at it and let you guys know if i find anything.
Ill bring it down to the makery thursday if anyone wants to come down and mess with it.

if anyone wants to see some pics of it this guy took a bunch and shared them.

I might of missed something.  Are we talking this sunday?  I might be able to make some of it if so.  What are the relevant stats like location and time?

john.

Oh, and if need be you can talk to travis about our possibility of scrap for use in the project.  Here at lincoln we have a warehouse full of stuff most of which I can get for a reasonable price or if I ask very nicely... free.

Travis can explain.... maybe.....

Oh and travis....  no we don't have any satellite dishes, but do you think those parking lot light shades could be put to use?

John et al,

I had thought about using them, yeah.  We could cut them up and make an array eventually. :)  I'm still working on getting the software defined radio bit to work, though, so that's a ways off.

Lincoln Makerspace is a wonderland of stuff, people.  John:  does this mean you're coming to visit Sunday?

Wing idea:  Duocopter w ultrasonic sensors top and bottom, and wings hanging off either side for decoration.  Mount it to a string, and when the sensor reads that its nearing the ceiling, the arduino has the props slow.  When the bottom sensor reads that its nearing the floor, the props speed up.  Visual effect would be a repeating rising and falling with flapping of the wings from the air.   We could maybe steal code from all those arduino quad projects out there...and we'd need two motors/2 escs.  The rest could be printed or made from paper, etc.

I am bringing up two of those parking lot lamp shades just in case some one has an idea on what to do with them.

They are hard to explain and I don't have them handy to take pic of them.   Imagine the Death Star.  Now make it white, and hollow.  Cut off the bottom about an eighth into the sphere and make the big laser part a hole.

They are made of fiberglass and about a meter at least in diameter.

hope that explains it a little.

I was playing around with it yesterday and managed to get it talking to a wired nunchuck, but the wireless one that I have wont work with it.

I also got it taking data from one of the MindFlex headband units and displaying the results onscreen.
I have 2 of the headbands if we want to do something with it.

These are just kind of  pieces that could be useful for a bigger project.

If we were going to make a copter out of this, we would need one of the Wii Motion Plus add ons.
I think its probably doable, but may take longer than we have to make it fiunctional.
Remember, its due NEXT TUESDAY, the 3rd. And we have to have a 2min video showing it off my then.

A head-to-head competition game might be good. Kinda works with the head-to-head bulls styling of the board.
The headbands could be modified to have horns, and we could remake a mindflex type game, maybe with some sort of 'wings' twist to make it not just a simple remake.

Reverse tug o war? Make an LED strip above the bulls. Green inside, to yellow, to red outside. Player 1 has his horns on, player 2 the same, both EEG devices. Countdown. Push with your mind. The winner has the more consistent push over 10 seconds or if there is a consistent gap for 5 seconds. The led reflects who is pushing more at the moment. At the end of 10, LEDs and music indicate a winner.

How about a pingpong ball on a wire with motors to move it across a playing field, with two RGB leds inside facing the player positions. Color of the LED indicates player EEG reading, difference of the average value over a time slice determines movement for that slice, position of the ball indicates total score.

Or the ball could be on what appears to be a pendulum, which is actually motor driven by a hidden motor, so the effort represents telekinetic effort.

Another tangent: make literal cartoon wings like some of you saw at Makerfaire, strapped to the back, raised w a series of cables and pulleys. Action is controlled on a sliding scale by mindflex input.

This has GREAT potential for the video:
     - "star" drinks a can of Red Bull
     - he/she starts "thinking" real hard with the mindflex on
     - the wings begin to appear from behind him
Finish with a closing screen that has the OMG logo and the "Red Bull Gives You Wings" tagline.

We would have to do the finding at a very rapid pace, shooting and editing such a piece would take at least a day, and building it and making it presentation ready, whatever it is, would take two. That leaves about enough time to upload it.

If we need "Just Something", I've got my S5 (not HD, but image stabilized and generally superior to my "HD" camera phone), and limited video editing capabilities (read Windows Live Movie Maker)... I can't say it's ideal, especially if we need high quality audio (internal mics only), but it's better than nothing...

Yay!  Snagged Patrick. :)

As for tomorrow's event, I'm guessing it should probably go down something like so:

1. Gather participants, vote on which project to do.
2. Separate into coders and physical design groups.
3. Coders either go grab applicable code from the interwebs and plug it into a script or do it from scratch.
4. Physical design goes to the store and gets parts, or if my some miracle we have everything, gets started.
5. Stick em together, see what we get.
6. Troubleshoot.
7. Win.

Well, this project is in the "final video submission creation" phase, having been tested and filmed his evening.  A big congrats to everyone involved for pulling a great project together so quickly.

For those of you who haven't seen this thing, it's a mind-controlled water cannon, that soaks the person with less brainpower (or something).  It's (no pun intended) quite a blast, and will certainly be available to see at next Tuesday's meeting.
