Hey All,
Between April 17 and April 21st, OurMoment is hosting the Two Dollar
Challenge, a poverty awareness and fundraising event I encourage you
all to participate in. Please come to the General interest meeting on
monday april 6 at 9pm in ICC 217A!!!
So.. what exactly is the two dollar challenge, and what does it
involve?
The Two Dollar Challenge is a fundraising and awareness event in which
students pledge to live on less than two dollars a day for 5 days.
Students taking the challenge will live on under two dollars a day in
solidarity with some 3 billion people around the world, generating
awareness in the community about the enormous challenge poverty
presents a while raising funds for development efforts. The challenge
typically requires students to sleep outside in a makeshift shelter
and without the use of prepaid facilities (Georgetown TDC is awaiting
approval from facilities, but the event can be successful with our
without a shanty) Students will abandon the comforts of cafeteria
food, and utilities and glimpse small bit of the poor living
conditions that affect more than half the world. This will be really
difficult. You will encounter obstacles you never thought of.
So why the (explicative) would you ever do this
Flyering and bakesales are great. But it is easy to ignore a flyer or
1 dollar cupcake. a group of students living, sleeping, eating and
drinking for less than two dollars a day will certainly receive
attention and thought on campus. A shanty on copley* lawn will
certainly garner more attention than a table in red square. We are
really trying to take things to the next level. And like most things,
at some level it is all about the money.
The two dollar challenge closes the gap between awareness and
fundraising, and promises great success in both.
Through letter writing campaigns, students will gain financial support
for their meaningful demonstrated dedication to global development,
and the highly visible nature of this campaign makes corporate
sponsorship viable. All proceeds will be used to create a permanent
Georgetown Micro-finance fund, that will be continually loaned and
reloaned to third world entrepreneurs.
