Greetings, Dancers,
Please join us next Sunday afternoon at the Tacoma Contra Dance, for music by “Old Growth Graveyard” and calling by Jesse Partridge. The dance is at the Fircrest Community Center, 555 Contra Costa Ave., Fircrest.
The band is a collaboration of major talents—on fiddle, viola, guitar, and voice. Ryan McKasson, from Lakewood, is a superb fiddler in the Scottish tradition, and Colin Cotter, from San Francisco, is famous for his guitar work and voice. The musicians describe their work as a “somewhat whimsical diversion” from their usual Celtic and Americana styles. How so? On Sunday, Ryan will often play viola, with its throaty richness, and Colin will play electric guitar, with its undeniable edge, thus grafting together acoustic and electric sonorities with a passion. The result, as you will find out, is wonderfully different music made for dancing.
Caller Jesse Partridge will start us off at 3:00 with a workshop for newcomers. This is a great way to learn the basics of contra dancing in a friendly, no-pressure environment. We then dance from 3:30 to 6:00, with a short intermission. Admission is $10 to $25—pay what you can afford. And tell your friends to join us.
I really look forward to hearing this unique band. See you on the dance floor.
Matt
