Greetings, Dancers,
Please join us this Sunday afternoon, February 18, at the Tacoma contra dance, featuring “The Hat Band” from Portland. They are Meg Tapley on flute, Jon Neff on guitar, and Syd Newell on fiddle, playing three-part harmonies and creative arrangements of traditional contra tunes, rags, blues, swing, and more.
The band members wear distinctive hats—you can see their photo on our website, https://tacomacontradance.org. Maybe you too want to wear a “distinctive” hat on Sunday. Yes! There will be a door prize for the best hat to rival the Hat Band.
Two hours ago, I learned that our scheduled caller has come down with the flu (not covid). Well, in his stead, Laura Mé Smith will call the dance. She is wonderful caller, and I really like that she tells jokes from the stage. That’s almost a lost art in the contra dance world.
If you are new to contra dancing, be there on Sunday by 3:00 for the workshop led by Laura Mé Smith. Within half an hour, you will know the basics of contra dancing. We then dance from 3:30 to 6:00, with a short intermission along the way.
The dance is at the Fircrest Community Center, 555 Contra Costa Drive, in Fircrest, WA. Plenty of parking is available.
Admission is $10 - $25 on a sliding scale. That means pay what you can afford, and please be generous. The money from the door goes to pay for rent, sound, band, and caller.
See you Sunday for a fun dance.
Matt
