To the pk3 amount: as far as I know Skirmish has limited access for maps listing (map won't show up in Skirmish menu even with valid arena code, but is still loadable via console), but if you have really huge amount of pk3 files in your installation, it's possible that engine just ran out of memory when tried to load all of these pk3 files in RAM. It's no good to store all goodies in live installation of engine. Make an archive directory (may be inside baseq3 folder and can contain a dot at the beginning of the dir /This is considered hidden on Unix systems/ - when making .newdir /with leading dot/ make sure to write also enclosing dot on Windows - it will be removed, but when not typed it will throw an error and your dir won't be renamed - it's a bug that causes Windows think the dot as file extension separator. Adding an extra dot simply tells Windows that this is gonna have a blank extension, and the extra dot is then removed automatically. When you need to change dir name while preserving the dot, use the same trick as Windows are sclerotic :D)myleg123 Rep. 90
#3 29 Aug 2016As far as I know, none of my .pk3 files have been altered in any way. It shows this message in Skirmish when I load a map. As for the directory solution, I tried the solution and it didn't work, It shows the same message. I am also running a Windows 10 PC.Edited 6.72 minutes after the original posting.CZghost Rep. 1681
#4 29 Aug 2016Then you have some of original pk3's corrupted. Even this can happen. It might be just corrupted address memory in your hard drive (can be repaired with defrag - not q3 mod but Windows built-in feature) Try to reinstall clean installation of the game (remove all pk3's and all dirs except for baaeq3 and missionpack and run point release installation again). If that does not work, then uninstall entire game and reinstall it from your install CD, then install point release again. Hope this will help.Edited 2.7 minutes after the original posting.myleg123 Rep. 90
#5 30 Aug 2016I noticed that this error only occurs in the UI Enhanced 1.2 mod, and not in vanilla. I am not sure why though. I did everything you said and I get the same error. I tried using an earlier version of UI Enhanced, but the only 2 versions I could find are 0.97 and 1.2. 0.97 doesn't work, it just shows a gray screen.CZghost Rep. 1681
#6 30 Aug 2016Then use vanilla. I do not even use ioquake3 (because it has graphics bug that causes my screen go very dark)...myleg123 Rep. 90
#7 30 Aug 2016The reason why I use UI Enhanced is because of more map and player model slots. I have so much that some don't get listed. If you could recommend any other mods that have more map and player model slots, that would be great!CZghost Rep. 1681
#8 30 Aug 2016Thats something that I do not care about much. Sorry. I learned to load maps always with console and then add bots of my own choice. I do not use custom skins and my gamename is without color tags (due to Team Arena's bug that doesn't allow for colored name).myleg123 Rep. 90
#9 30 Aug 2016Alright. Thanks for the help anyways!CZghost Rep. 1681
#10 30 Aug 2016May the luck be with you :)myleg123 Rep. 90
#11 02 Jan 2017I think I have found the solution to this problem.
I recently found out about the Spearmint engine, and I downloaded it. It doesn't support mods though. The only mod I use is UI Enhanced, but I don't need it. This issue doesn't happen in the Spearmint engine and it also adds more map and player model slots. It also adds graphic options. I think I have found a new favorite engine! I am adding this post so people with this same issue can find a solution.Edited 21.97 hours after the original posting.myleg123 Rep. 90
#12 13 Apr 2017I forgot to add this to this post, but the Spearmint engine has a limit to how many maps it can show. But I have found the true solution. I just disabled the "Pure Server" option in the Server tab. it would've helped if I actually checked the documents that were in the uie folder. Now there isn't an issue with the maplist anymore. I don't have better graphics options anymore, but I can use mods again!Edited 53 seconds after the original posting.Only registered members can post a reply.

quick introduction as it's my first post here; been a fan of anything aesthetically 'dark' for years; I like dark atmospheric music, dark literature and of course I couldn't but love Quake1 :) I'm not a massive gamer but have been obsessed with this game for years and it was a great companion during my latter student years. Recently re-discovered it after a tip on the Quake facebook site (thanx!) and bought the game and two mission packs from Gog.com. Finished them all at nightmare level and found most secrets and secret levels. I thought that was it, but much to my delight I discovered there is a whole Quake1 community here, including several passionate people who constantly create new maps, mods etc. How wonderful ;)

Unfortunately my technical skills don't match my enthusiasm and that's where I need your help, as I got stuck trying to download new maps. I downloaded and installed successfully Quakespasm, and reading the recommendations at Quaddicted I tried to install Quake injector but that's where I get stuck. According to the accompanying readme I need to Double click `quakeinjector.jar`, or use the supplied
`quakeinjector.bat`. Unfortunately I don't find any such named files in the archive after extraction. Help!

Another issue is the downloading of maps. I read the instructions on this thread: =382 and tried to change the 'target' on my properties which is "C:\GOG Games\Quake\quakespasm.exe" by adding some of the maps code leaving a space, e.g. -heapsize 65536 -game jam6 or -heapsize 65536 -game retrojam4 +map start
Unfortunately whenever I am doing this I'm getting a 'Problem with the shortcut, the name specified in target is not valid' type of error. So close but so far, aarghhh! Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as I'm rather excited at continuing to explore the mysterious worlds of Quake.

Are you sure you downloaded the right file? Because quakeinjector.jar is there (no quakeinjector.bat, however). Or maybe you need to enable the display of file extensions in your OS in order to see it. If the Java Runtime Environment is installed, it should give the .jar files a special icon to set them apart from other files.

By the way, with Quakespasm you can also load mods from the console, e.g. game jam6, so no need for multiple shortcuts. On some occasions, it's recommended to do exec quake.rc afterwards so special settings the mod requires are applied automatically.

Thanks, I re-installed java, downloaded from your link, and everything works. It seems that the Quake injector files were defaulting to 'winrar' instead of Java. Installing Quake injector has made it very easy to install and play maps so all my issues are solved at once ;) Can't believe how many maps there are out there I wasn't aware of! I feel like 19 years old again ;)

@aquakelovingdoctor You don't get to ask here where you can RIP Quake, you ask where you can BUY it. The Quake community is usually adamant on being legit. Come on, it's not that expensive! And you're a doctor, you're supposed to have a comfortable paycheck...

I was getting the same error message as above, and have followed this thread and applied Alpha03. The program is running again, I see it "downloading package database" for several seconds, and then the game list is presented to me. However, none of my installed maps are recognized.

I've tried "reload database" several times, "check for installed maps (experimental)", no luck. Checked the engine configuration file paths, all look good. I re-installed game 1000cuts1a and the program asked me if I wanted to overwrite files, so I know it sees the installed packages. I did the overwrite and the game ran fine.

Then I tried re-installing another game I knew was already on my system, 9terrors. Again asked if I wanted to overwrite, I said no and the installation exited. But although it sees the file, the game is not presented as playable.

I got around finishing the first set of maps and I gotta say I love it. When Quake2RTX came out I never got around on actually finishing the first level.

Kudos to Nightdive for actually making it playable for me and giving me the motivation to start playing properly like the Quake Remaster, and maybe finishing it somewhere down the line. Too bad multiplayer is still shit for me since I can't even get my friends to play boomshoot with me, everyone else got 2-digit ping and I here I am hitting the 200s ?

If the host leaves or just straight up sucks at hosting (don't host on WiFi, for example), your connection will drop as there's nothing to fall back on (nor is falling back even possible, Quake2's netcode is specfically designed in a way that makes host migration impossible).

I don't know if you're the one in charge of stuff, but the servers are really bonkers. Regardless of joining a public game or hosting one, within 15 minutes there's a general disconnect, where people can't join anymore. And throughout these few minutes of gameplay, people keep getting disconnected. Me and my buddies have even been disconnected from our own servers that we hosted in attempts to try seeing if it was our own hosting that was faulty. "disconnected from lobby". We all have proper ISP:s.
