For the contest, we created a custom iTwin Viewer containing pre-loaded locations including Auckland, Sydney, San Francisco, Redmond and Helsinki. Because a 3D model contains details that may have been hidden or otherwise obscured in traditional 2D plans, elevations, and sections, but PDF brings more to the table than just the ability to view a file. Powerful mobile devices and readily available PDF viewers have made field markups without a roll of paper drawings a bit more practical.
Pick a location in the map canvas to open the viewer
Pick a location on the map canvas in the host application to refocus all opened Views and the Reference View in the Orbit 3D Mapping Viewer to the chosen location.
Add the selected objects as overlays to the viewer
This option gives the possibility to visualize features from an external layer on the 3D Mapping Viewer. The features are visualized in the 3D Mapping Viewer using standard formatting. And a new resource is added to the Resources Feature Sidebar.
MicroStation is developed by Bentley Systems. In case you want to review the DGN files in a separate viewer, Bentley offers a free of charge product Bentley View for viewing and printing DGN, DXF, and DWG files. ImageSite includes an integrated, high-performance viewer for web browser-based viewing of documents. ImageSite supports web-browser based viewing and markup of most raster file types, including TIF, IMR, IMT, CALS, BMP, GIF, and JPG. ImageSite also supports web-browser based viewing and markup of MS Office, and Adobe Acrobat files by conversion of these file types to SVG, TIF, or JPG format.
With ImageSite CAD Connectors, ImageSite supports web-browser based viewing and markup of CAD/vector and PostScript file types. Any file type that can be viewed in the ImageSite viewer is also supported for markup, collaboration, and server-side printing. Any file type that is not supported for viewing in the ImageSite viewer is automatically downloaded and opened for viewing in its native application, depending on administrator settings.
AutoCAD files are uploaded and rendered to SVG format on the ImageSite server for display in the ImageSite viewer. The default is to include all layouts on upload. If the default is changed, only the active layout is included. eQuorum's AutoCAD Connector and a recent version of AutoCAD must be installed on the server for rendering to occur
SolidWorks files are uploaded and rendered to SVG format on the ImageSite server for display in the ImageSite viewer. eQuorum's SolidWorks Connector and a recent version of SolidWorks must be installed on the server for rendering to occur.
Inventor files are uploaded and rendered to SVG format on the ImageSite server for display in the ImageSite viewer. The default is to include all layouts on upload. eQuorum's Inventor Connector and a recent version of Inventor must be installed on the server for rendering to occur.
Revit files are uploaded and rendered to SVG format on the ImageSite server for display in the ImageSite viewer. eQuorum's Revit Connector and a recent version of Revit must be installed on the server for rendering to occur.
MicroStation V7 files are rendered to SVG format on the ImageSite server for display in the ImageSite viewer. MicroStation V7 must be installed on the ImageSite server before ImageSite is installed for rendering to occur.
NX and STL CAD files are rendered to JSON3D format on the ImageSite server for display in the ImageSite viewer. When rendering is complete, collaboration and printing are enabled. Markup is currently not enabled.
Each uploaded file is converted to multi-page ZMF format for display within the ImageSite viewer. This enables markup, collaboration, and server-side printing. The unconverted native file is also compressed and stored in the ImageSite database. Microsoft Office 2010 or newer must be installed on the web server for rendering of MS Office files. eQuorum strongly recommends installing MS Office 2014.
All uploaded files are maintained in native form for playback in ImageSite. The ImageSite viewer plays these files using the video/audio DASH player embedded in the HTML5 browser. Currently viewable thumbnails are not available for these file types.
Visio files are rendered using ImageSite's OfficeToPdf.exe module, which uses the installed version of Visio to convert them to PDF. ImageSite then renders the PDF file to the ZMF format for display in the ImageSite viewer.
In 2005, eQuorum developed the first all browser-based EDMS. Tipster David Wardwell Jr. explains a method for viewing and printing AutoCAD files to 3D PDF formats.
"Bentley Systems has a few download options for its viewer program, Bentley View V8i. This viewer can open MicroStation files and AutoCAD DWG/DXF files. Once open, the viewer will allow you to plot to a 3D PDF file. AutoCAD does not have this feature, so I use the viewer to open my DWG file, then output to 3D PDF. It is a free and fairly easy work-around to AutoCAD's lack of 3D PDF capabilities, plus the Bentley View V8i is a good program for reviewing the MicroStation files that I get from time to time."
Notes from Cadalyst tip reviewer Brian Benton: This is a great work-around for this problem. Out of the box, AutoCAD can print to 3D DWF files and to PDF, but the PDFs are only 2D drawings. There are many third-party applications that can do this for you, but this option is free and it has the added bonus of viewing MicroStation files for you too.
