I am Linux want-a-be (I know very little). I am trying to load Skype
and keep getting a 'repomd.xml' metadata error. Looks like the XO is
trying to go to the website 'http://mock.laptop.org/repos/olpc.ship2'.
It indicates that the url is open and connection is refused. However,
when I try to connect to this website, It does not connect from my PC.
I have read that someone had this working. This PC is for my grand
daughter to learn and use to communicate with her father for the next
few months, as he is working abroad.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi:
Did you try this link:

http://olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=471.0

People seem to have had success with the instructions provided there.

I might get around to installing skype myself. I will let you know what
I find out. I am busy for the next couple of days, however, so I don't
know if I will be able to get you any info soon.

Hi:
I did end up installing Skype. I did not run into the same problems
that you seem to have. Your error seems to be the result of running
yum. It would be helpful if I could see the output you are seeing.
My output is below. Would it be possible for you to reply with that.
If you aren't reaching the mock.laptop.org site you won't get very
far. I can reach that site from my PC browser, although the page I
get say I am forbidden.

I will send this to you later when I get back home. Which flavor of
Skype did you install and does video work for you?

Wilson,

I followed the link you sent me and it work great after I deleted the
'skype.repo' file I had created manually. I now have it installed and
getting ready to test it. I will let you let you know how it works
accross the Atlantic.

I was able to make a skype call with no problem, however, I found that
the version I installed is audio only. So I installed the static
version 2.0.0.27. Now when I type 'skype' at the command line, I get
this error.
-bash-3.2# skype
skype: error while loading shared libraries: libXss.so.1: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory
-bash-3.2#
-bash-3.2#
-bash-3.2# yum install libsigc++20

Package libsigc++20 - 2.0.17-2.i386 is already installed.
Nothing to do
-bash-3.2#

Do I need to install a different library?

I use yum to install the missing library and skype will load, but I
have no sound. Still troubleshooting.

There's also a wiki page covering skype:

   http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Skype

I haven't had time to read through it yet, and I'm not a skype user anyway, so.... YMMV
