Greetings all! My name is Kyle Doane. I will be moving to Oxford
this fall while my wife goes to Oxford Brookes for her Masters in
Primate Conservation. (Currently, we live in the United States).

My wife and I will eventually be living and working in East Africa.
She is a primatologist and I am a science educator. I've worked as a
curriculum developer (http://pacsci.org/origins) and planetarian for
the Pacific Science Center as well as an instructor for the Woodland
Park Zoo (http://zoo.org).

I am currently involved with two projects in Africa where the XO
laptop would be a godsend. The first is a new Maasai-run school in a
remote location in Kenya. (http://www.maasai-association.org). I
took the first computers to this school- a pair of laptops with
running EdUbuntu. The teachers had never had an opportunity to touch
a computer before.

The second project in Rwanda. I am working with a member of the
Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project to start the first science center
and public animal sanctuary in Rwanda.

I look forward to meeting you when I arrive in Oxford this September.
Will love to bounce ideas about these projects as well as your own.

- Kyle

Hi Kyle,

Welcome to the group.

Out of interest, do you have much experience with the XO yet? I'd be interested to know your thoughts on it, and how ready you think it is for the classroom experience.

I have not purchased an XO yet, but am considering picking up one from
ebay before moving to the UK. I like the IDEA of the XO for remote
locations where power supply is a big issue and computer parts are
generally not available.

Right now, I really like EdUbuntu for classroom applications in areas
where used computer parts are more readily available.
