Hi Anna et al.,
Thanks for the feedback on the OLMC site. You pointed out a problem I
was unaware of; the menu items may have appeared illegible to people
using MS Internet Explorer running on Windows because it does not
properly display transparent PNG images in the same way as Netscape and
Firefox do, or even IE on the Mac. This contravenes the implementation
of the web as recommended by the authoritative W3 Consortium.
Oh well, since so many people do use MSIE, I have changed the images
back to old-fashioned transparent GIFs.
After looking into IE on WinXP I also discovered that that browser also
doesn't support the positioning of elements properly either, so many of
you may have been seeing the pages with the menu buttons hidden under
the logo. That, too, I have tried to work around and it should be fixed
now.
It's rather strange that Microsoft's browser (the world's most popular)
running under Microsoft's own operating system doesn't work as well as
any of the others -- one more reason not to use it! Doing some
searching on then web reveals that this is is not just sloppy
programming but likely a deliberate attempt to stifle competition.
In light of this demonstration of bad (or even evil ) programming I
recommend people migrate over to Firefox, a free browser developed and
constantly improved cooperatively by the world open source community.
It conforms to W3 recommendations on how the web should work. It's
faster and has a number of features not found in MSIE. I will of course
attempt to accommodate all browsers with my code but, as long as people
keep using IE, developers will not be able to implement the
improvements that HTML 4.0 and CSS have to offer.
Download a copy free in your language and operating system of choice at
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/all
As to the links in the PDF files, they work on the Mac and I haven't
figured out why they don't work on Windows (why do we try to resist the
evil empire?). MS Word docs don't display in web browsers so use the
links you can cut and paste them from the Newsletter into the location
field of your browser and hit enter.
I'll be putting up some of your pictures soon, so keep an eye on the
site,
Steev
