Cleaning the river Yamuna Ji is not a big task as it seems.

It is a case of reorganization of water that is being pulled out by Haryana and U.P. states of India and halting the sewage being pumped back by a few towns and Delhi city that lie on its banks.

Issues:

{Water flow during 8 months a year (other than monsoon)}

1. At Hathini Kund Barrage, out of the 82 cumecs of original natural water flow, only 2.7 cumecs is left to flow on Yamuna bed.
2. Before Delhi, whatever little mixed flow of water remains is then totally taken away by the city and hence the river ceases to exist.
3. The Yamuna bed in Delhi stretch is used as a sewage canal to carry its waste water upto Agra canal at Okhla Barrage.
4. The dry bed beyond Okhla barrage is fed with shahdara canal sewage and polluted water of Hindon river.
5. What reaches Vrindavan-Gokul-Mathura is a cocktail of various polluted waters.


The below graphic easily explains the issues of the holy river Shri Yamuna Ji. (Issues highlighted  in red text)









If an adequate flow of Natural fresh water from Yamunotri constantly flows on the Yamuna bed and no sewage (treated or untreated) is allowed to enter it then there can be a sparkling Yamuna Ji in Vrindavan and beyond.

A simple re-organization of water taken out can ensure 10 cumecs of fresh water from Yamnotri to flow to Braj Vrindavan and beyond all year.

A free flow of 10 cumces of original Natural water on Yamuna bed all long it's course has been...

1. Ordered by The Honorable Supreme Court of India.
2. Stated by Central Pollution Control Board of India in a sworn Affidavit to Supreme Court of India.
3. Suggested by many NGO’s, environmentalists and scientific papers in India.



Doable action...

1.    The government can divert extra water flow from Hathini Kund Barrage to the Main Yamuna flow. Any objection or resistance from Haryana and UP is unsustainable as most of the water its takes from Yamunaji is not used for drinking. All its uses for factories, power plants, distilleries and refineries can be fed by of waste waters from Sewage Treatment Plants and their own water recycling. It has been studied that most of its irrigation needs are taken care of by boring underground water tables.
 
2.    In Delhi, even if fresh water reaches, it shall mix with the sewage put on Yamuna Bed by various drains. This sewage is actually later diverted from Yamuna bed at Okhla Barrage to Agra canal. All the government needs to do is create a sewage canal beside ring road or a pipeline under it and let the sewage flow to Agra canal without entering into Yamuna bed (Supreme Court High Powered Committee Recommendations). It is a tiny project compared to 70,000 crores spent on Commonwealth games and the impossible achievement of building underground railway under the most congested markets of Old Delhi.

3.    At least 3 days in a month in the lean season months of November till May the river be allowed to run free (all along its length) of all the Barrages on it. Such flow while on one hand helps dilute pollution in the river, on the other facilitates a continuous sub surface flow in the river, recharging ground water and adding to the surface flow at places in the river. Letting the river flow unfettered for just three days in a month should not be a problem with the managers of   the existing water abstraction structures on the river (Every year in monsoons the various canals are shut down for days together and the states they feed, do manage without them).

4.    The Government should make discharging of untreated effluent into rivers a culpable offence requiring a minimum prison sentence and officials who fail to check such offences be charged with collusion in crime as accessories.

If the above is earnestly implemented then we can bring back to a great extent the lost glory of Yamuna Maharani ji.

All it needs is a Political Will - Public Will - YOUR WILL.

You CAN :

1. Pray for the cause. Prayers have great powers.

2. Spread the message to all who care. There is strength in numbers.  If there is enough display of public will from both India and beyond, the managers of Indian rivers shall see reason and cleanse Yamuna ji for all times to come.

4. Be amongst the other 100,000 people who shall virtually push the idea through phone calls, faxes or E - Mails.
