Hi All,

Every year April 22 is recognized around the world as 'Earth Day.' Some of us might ask, why an Earth Day? Did you know:

-          Garbage in a landfill remains there for 30 years.

-          Of the 500 million automobiles on Earth, each burns an average of 7 liters (2 gallons) of fuel/day. Each liter of fuel releases 3 kilos of carbon dioxide into the air.

-          Two-thirds of the Earth is covered by water, but only one hundredth of one percent of the Earth's water comes from fresh water streams.

-          Seven billion kilos of garbage is dumped in to our oceans annually.

-          For every 1,000 kilos of paper (1 ton) recycled, we can save 2,000 liters of water free from chemicals. Each ton of paper that is recycled saves 17 trees.

-          Five billion aluminum cans are used each year. It takes 90% less energy to recycle those cans than make new ones.

The list of things we do to pollute the earth is very long. At this rate, future generations will inherit an Earth that is not fit for living. Earth Day is set aside to bring greater awareness to the issues of environmental degradation and our collective and individual responsibility to help create a more sustainable 'green' future for all of us. Earth Day is one way to remind us that we need to change our habits and patterns.

At its inception, Earth Day had 20 million participants that gathered to encourage activism, and increase awareness regarding environmental issues such as air quality, water pollution, carbon dioxide levels, and atmospheric changes. More than 40 years later on Earth Day, this Friday, April 22, more than 1 billion people around the world are expected to engage in environmental activities, doing their part to make this day the largest civic observance in the world.

What can each of us do on Earth Day?

-          Turn off lights in areas not in use.

-          Unplug power cords when not in use (these cords draw energy even when not charging).

-          Reuse bags, boxes, cups, and plates whenever possible.

-          Recycle, recycle, recycle! Recyclable materials include a variety of paper, plastics, mixed papers, glass, aluminum cans.

-          Carpool to work.

-          Plant a tree.
