Hello Gardeners, Composters, & Volunteers
This email is to thank all of you for all your hard work this season. Thanks to you the garden looks great and there was access to fresh vegetables and herbs. In addition, your help enabled us to kick start a very successful composting project with a grant from the Citizens Committee for New York City.
Gardeners, local residents, caterers, North Brooklyn Compost Project, St. Nicks Alliance and others, all took part in reducing the amount of garbage that goes into the local waste stream. It took a lot of time and effort to pick up the tumbler NBCP donated, shop for supplies, prepare the back of the garden and build a compost bin. It took a lot of time and effort to educate folks regarding the benefits of composting as well as how to do it! And volunteers have continued to work maintaining the compost area, accept compost, and tumble the bin daily.
We'll be looking forward to using the compost next growing season!
Now that the cold weather is here we won't be putting kitchen scraps into the tumbler as the food can freeze and cause the container to crack. We also won't be adding kitchen scraps to the wooden compost bins as it could attract rodents.
You may however continue to put coffee grounds and tea into the bin closest to the tumbler.
And please be careful walking on the path as it may quickly become slippery during the cold weather.
Have a great holiday and winter!
