The State Police Crisis Negotiations Team spoke with Hurlburt throughout the day Thursday until he surrendered at about 4 p.m. State police said he was alone in the residence and had threatened to harm himself. He was taken to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo for evaluation. ECMC officials declined to release any information on his condition.
The Cattaraugus County sheriff's Department was at the scene and have assisted with the investigation, which continues.
Route 16 in Delevan was closed and traffic rerouted during Thursday's standoff. Sheriff's deputies used the 911 system to notify local residents of the situation.
Thursday's incident was not Hurlburt's first brush with the law.
He pleaded guilty in 2000 to a reduced charge of criminally negligent homicide relating to the July 21, 1999 death of 18-year-old classmate Dana P. Stark, who was killed when his car was struck by a truck driven by Hurlburt.
Police said at the time that Hurlburt moved from the right lane of traffic into the on-coming lane which resulted in a head-on collision between his vehicle and Stark's on Route 219 in Great Valley near where the two teens lived.
Stark - who was finishing up graduation requirements at Ellicottville Central High School, where Hurlburt attended the June commencement ceremonies - was pronounced dead at the scene.
