Olean General names new CEO

OLEAN — The Olean General Hospital Board of Directors has officially welcomed Timothy J. Finan, an Allegany native with 20 years' experience in health care leadership, as the hospital's new president and chief executive officer.
Mr. Finan will take the place of former CEO Bruce Cummings, who announced his resignation Aug. 31 to assume a position in Connecticut. Dr. Daniel Rissi, the hospital's vice president of medical affairs, served as interim CEO while the search was conducted.
"To be able to come back to my hometown and engage in very important work is a wonderful opportunity for me," Mr. Finan said. "Secretly, I've looked forward to this since the day I got out of graduate school. I had always imagined that it would be pretty special if I ever had the opportunity to come back to Olean. With Bruce's departure to Connecticut, I became aware of the opening."
Mr. Finan currently works as executive director of Evercare, a subsidiary organization of United Health Group based in Rochester. He lives in East Aurora with his wife Cathy and their two high school-aged children.
Mr. Finan said he plans to begin his new position Jan. 9.
The board of directors chose him unanimously from among three final candidates, said board Chairman Louis J. Proto. The hospital hired international executive search firm Witt-Kiefer to assist in finding suitable candidates. The finalists in the search each had an opportunity to meet with board members, community medical staff, and all hospital employees before a decision was made.
Mr. Finan credited Mr. Cummings with leading Olean General onto a path of financial health and paving the way for future success. When Mr. Cummings joined the hospital in 2002, Olean General had an annual operating loss of $8 million. Under his leadership, that deficit shrank to $2 million per year.
"They've done a very fine job repositioning the hospital after some very difficult years that preceded Bruce's arrival. They've effectively set up a road map in terms of how the hospital can best respond to the challenges that are out there. All hospitals in New York state have very significant financial challenges. Olean General has some financial challenges, but we definitely want to grow our revenue and manage our expenses."
He said he is proud to be involved with an organization as extensive as Olean General.
"You typically don't find a hospital like Olean General in cities the size of Olean," he said. "I think the community is tremendously fortunate to have a hospital like Olean General. It's got a widely diverse service base and excellent medical staff with all the major specialties and subspecialties represented."
Mr. Finan said he plans to address the community's concern of long waits in the hospital's emergency room.
"It's an important concern of the community, so it's going to continue to be an important concern for the hospital," he said. "My first priority will be to learn extensively what's going on there, and work with the staff to address concerns."
Mr. Finan received his bachelor's degree from Hamilton College and his master's in health care administration from George Washington University. He has held positions as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Sisters Hospital in Buffalo and president and chief executive officer of Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center in Niagara Falls.
Mr. Finan also has served as executive vice president of Univera Healthcare and as president of the Health Services Group of The Lifetime Healthcare Companies, Univera's parent company. He is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and a licensed nursing home administrator.
Mr. Finan said that for now, he and his family plan to maintain residences both at the Wheeler House in Portville as well as their current home in East Aurora.
"In time we hope to move down (to the Olean area). It's my intention to be involved in the Olean community," he said.
