Sr. Eileen
Mary Finnegan, SC at her 60th Jubilee in
1996. | Eileen
Mary Finnegan grew up in northern Manhattan with
her two sisters, two brothers and Irish immigrant
parents. She had the Sisters of Charity of New
York as teachers and role models from grades 1 –
12 at Incarnation School and at Cathedral High
School.
As Sr. Eileen, she taught at 11
elementary schools over 48 years. Her longest
parish associations were with St. Peter’s in
Haverstraw (10 years) and with the Elizabeth Seton
Academy in Yonkers (nine years).
In September 1975, while attending
the canonization of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton in
Rome, Sr. Eileen was hit by a motorcycle and badly
injured. Her recuperation took 18 months; after
her recovery, Sister returned to her teaching post
at Seton Academy.

Sister’s Congregational service
included being the Sister Servant at Holy Trinity
Convent in Mamaroneck where she was also the
principal of the parish school for two years. At
age 70, Sister traded the classroom for the office
and worked for 12 years at the Congregation’s
administrative headquarters at Mount Saint
Vincent.
At age 82, Sr. Eileen began what
would be 13 years in a ministry of Prayer, Service
and Witness at the Convent of Mary the Queen.
Sister died just four days after the
75th anniversary of her entering the Congregation
– on February 2, 1936. We rejoice with her now as
she meets her God “face to face.” |

| Sr.
Loretta Josepha (born Veronica
Hope) grew up in the Bronx with her parents and
two sisters. She had the Sisters of Charity of New
York as teachers at St. Augustine School and at
Cathedral High School. After working for the New
York Telephone Company for a year, she entered the
Congregation on September 8, 1944 and began what
would be an extraordinary career as an
educator.
Sister’s education ministry spanned 5 decades
and touched students, families and faculty in 9
schools and 2 countries.
Sister’s "education ministry spanned
5 decades and touched students,
families and
faculty...” |
Her long-time desire to serve in foreign
missions was fulfilled by seven years in The
Bahamas, where Sister was a teacher and
headmistress – back in the days when our Sisters
wore the traditional habit and before air
conditioning (1952-59).
Sr. Josepha’s longest school affiliation was
with Saints Peter and Paul at 838 Brook Avenue in
the Bronx. There she taught grades 6 – 8 at
various times from 1971 – 96, and specialized in
Language Arts, reading and religion. Sister
retired from the classroom in 1996 but continued
to live in Saints Peter and Paul parish until
2003.
In our Archives is a news story with a photo
showing Sr. Josepha enthusiastically cheering on
the Sts. Peter and Paul’s boys’ basketball team to
the Varsity Crown in a CYO tournament. Sister was
better known though for urging her students on to
academic victory.
Sr. Josepha was a joyful, enthusiastic person;
she was quick to assess a situation and often had
a witty remark.
When she was leaving the Bahamas, Sister told a
friend, “I will miss you, but God will be our
connection.” Now she has finally met God
face to face. Rest in peace, Sister
Josepha. |

Sr. Maria
Rhoda Reed, SC
| Catherine Reed
was born and raised in Brooklyn. She was the
second youngest of 10 children. As many
Brooklynites of her day, she attended Bishop
McDonnell High School, where the Sisters of
Charity of New York were teaching. After one year
at St. Joseph’s College, Brooklyn, she entered the
Congregation and took the religious name of Maria
Rhoda.
Sr. Rhoda’s ministry was education and she
taught in seven parochial schools over 40 years.
Her longest school / parish association was with
St. Mary’s (AKA the Immaculate Conception) in
Yonkers. After teaching 4th and 5th grades at the
parish school for 15 years, Sr. Rhoda served as a
pastoral assistant for the next 23 years. For the
first 14 years of that period, Sister also was the
Coordinator of Religious Education; from 1993 to
2002, she also was Development Director for St.
Mary’s School.
Sister’s mission was always to serve the poor.
One way that she did this was to sponsor
walk-a-thons to raise money so that children could
receive scholarships to attend St. Mary’s
School. Even after her “retirement” in 2002,
Sr. Rhoda continued to visit St. Mary’s School,
helping out where she could and speaking to the
children of all grades about St. Elizabeth
Seton.
“Sister’s mission was always to serve
the poor.” |
When Sr. Rhoda officially retired from active
ministry in 2002 at age 83, the staff and
parishioners of St. Mary’s Parish and School gave
Sr. Rhoda a big send-off and wrote:
| Throughout the years Sr. Rhoda
dedicated herself to serving St. Mary’s “above
and beyond” in whatever capacity was needed.
She’s done so with graceful capability, humor,
and enthusiasm. The parish has been fortunate to
have Sr. Maria Rhoda with us for the past
thirty-eight years and it is with a collective
grateful heart that we offer Sister a huge and
loving “THANK YOU.” |
We add our thanks to God for giving Sr. Rhoda
to us for so long. |

Sr. Mary
Rosilda Tabacco,
SC
| Sophia Tabacco
grew up in Yonkers, where her immigrant parents
(from Italy and Poland) had settled. She had one
sister, two step-sisters and two step-brothers.
She was educated by the Sisters of Charity of New
York in grade school (St. Joseph’s) and in high
school (Seton Academy). She entered the
Congregation two years after graduation.
As Sr. Mary Rosilda, she specialized in
elementary education, mostly the upper grades.
Ironically, her longest parish associations were
her first and last assignments, both in Manhattan.
Sr. Rosilda began her teaching career at St.
Patrick Old Cathedral School, where she spent 17
years. Sister closed out her career at St.
Ignatius Loyola School, where she was a teacher
and librarian in the school for seven years,
followed by 15 years in active retirement in the
parish. In between those two schools, there were
five others, including St. Margaret of Cortona in
the NW Bronx, where she served as principal for
six years.
“...Sr. Rosilda’s life was spent in quiet
service to the community she
loved...” |
During her years of retirement at the Convent
of Mary the Queen, Sr. Rosilda kept busy with
things both large and small. She was always ready
and willing to talk about the happy days spent at
St. Ignatius.
Sr. Rosilda died just seven months shy of her
100th birthday. She saw the turning not only of a
century but a millennium. Despite the often
tumultuous times in which she lived, Sr. Rosilda’s
life was spent in quiet service to the community
she loved, and to the countless children she
prepared for their futures.
We are grateful for her long and productive
life. |
