Sister Eileen Regina Leonard, S.C.

Sister Eileen Regina Leonard, S.C., who founded Cathedral High School’s renowned marching band and taught at the girls’ school for more than four decades, died March 7 at the New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. She was 87.
She formed the band in 1980 at the request of Cardinal Terence Cooke, who had turned to her during that year’s Columbus Day Parade and said that Cathedral should have its own marching band. The Cathedral band marches about 30 times annually and has won numerous awards. Sister Eileen Regina used to march proudly alongside the band.
In 2009 the Cathedral band escorted the Sisters of Charity of New York up Fifth Avenue during the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which that year was dedicated to the congregation’s 200th anniversary.
During a lifelong ministry in education, Sister Eileen Regina devoted 58 years to three schools: Visitation in the Bronx, 1947-1949; St. Barnabas High School, also in the Bronx, where she taught Spanish, algebra, social studies and religion, 1949-1963; and Cathedral High School in Manhattan, where she taught Spanish and chaired the school’s Spanish Department two years and then the Modern Languages Departments for the next 40 years, before retiring in 2005.
In 2000 she was awarded the Elizabeth Ann Seton Compassionate Educator Award, the highest honor given by the Archdiocesan Department of Education to a teacher.
Born in New York City, she entered the Sisters of Charity in 1945 and professed final vows in 1950. She held a bachelor’s degree in English from Hunter College, and master’s degrees in Spanish from Fordham University and administration from Hunter College. She also held New York State certification in Spanish, administration and supervision.
Her brother, Father John Leonard, S.J., and a sister, Marion Ryan, survive her.
A Funeral Mass was offered March 12 at Our Lady of Angelus Church in Rego Park, Queens. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Queens.  mass that sister joann was at
