Thanks for sending over the deliverables (and the picture)!

 

I’m just back from a trip to Paris, so I’ll take a look at them with the team here in the coming weeks.

 

I haven’t heard anything from your TA yet, but I’ve pasted at the bottom of this message some comments from myself and my manager on the project. Feel free to use them in your presentation to your class (if you haven’t had the presentation yet).

 

It was also a pleasure working with all of you this year. I wish you all the best in your endeavors. Keep in touch!

“Retailing is a fast business with priorities and strategies that are constantly changing.  One of the greatest challenges for retailers is to stop, take a look back,

and analyze the myriad of sales and promotions in order to learn from decisions and hopefully make better, more profitable ones in the future.

 

So our project came about for the Okto team:  Can they look back over the past few years of data and give us statistical guidance on how our Presidents Picks

(weekly sale items) performed with some vision into what we should feature in future promotions?  We gave them a lot of data and very little direction.

 

The Results:

 

-          The Okto Team’s approach to the request was excellent.  The fully understood the request and all of the variables (seasonality, variable prices, etc)

that they had to account for when reviewing the data.

 

-          The project and presentation – from my perspective – was a team effort.  Everyone contributed to the project and the presentation and they worked

well together.

 

-          The team had clear explanations of what we could derive from the data and what couldn’t be derived from the data.

 

-          The most impressive portion of the presentation is the fact that they didn’t just present us with a 400 column spreadsheet and said “here’s your results”.

They took the time to build quick and easy to use interfaces for us to use on a daily basis.  Time is a key factor in our business…it is imperative sometimes

that we take 15 minutes to get to an answer rather than an hour. 

 

I was very pleased with the work that the Okto team did for us.  Once again, it was well planned, organized, with a defiant solution.  I wish to thank them all for the

time an effort that they put into this President’s Pick Project.”

“I was very pleased with the work done by the Okto Team on the President’s Picks project.

 

I remember that at the beginning of my career, one of the big challenges when you come out of school and into the business world, is that you are not faced with “clean” datasets ready for mathematical modeling, and that problems don’t have clearly defined “right or wrong” answers. The members of the Okto Team were able to tackle this brilliantly: they applied the necessary cleaning and re-formatting to the raw data provided in order to prepare it for analysis, and they reformulated our vague business guidelines to the problem into clear angles of analysis.

 

I was also impressed by their presentation and communication skills. For the final presentation, they paid particular care to adapt their slides and speech to the audience. They were mindful not to overwhelm the people in the room with mathematical concepts and formulas, and instead explained very clearly to non-engineers what was at stake for each part of their analysis and the kind of approach they had taken. They had in annex more detailed documents should we wish to know more about the technical aspects. They also kept the audience engaged throughout the presentation, and made sure that every question received a satisfying and clear answer.

 

I was the point-person at FreshDirect the Okto Team communicated with. Throughout the duration of the project I was glad to receive regular updates, as well as very pertinent questions related to the problem. At the end of the project, not only we received an end-product that is usable and provides value immediately, but they also made it future-friendly with different components that can be re-used and improved on.
