Hey everyone!

Jeremy, Rob and I are starting to put together our lineup for the November 14th get together.  Would any of you be interested in speaking?  We have a 20 minute spot available and I'm eager to learn from y'all.

If you have ideas but don't think you'll be ready for November, that's cool too.  It'd be great to pencil in some talks for the future.

Finally, if you have something you'd love to share but don't think you'll be able to stretch it out to 20 minutes, make it known.  We can look into doing 5 minute lightening talks if that is more suitable.  Don't be shy, don't hold back.

The most important thing is that we're talking and hanging out together.  We were blown away by the attendance at our first meeting and want to keep things moving!

All the Best,

Michael

P.S. - if you are feeling extra shy, hit me up privately.

What kind of talks would this community want? Any thoughts on that? Would there be a place for basics? Or perhaps language constructs and concepts that might fill in a few holes? I usually think of cutting-edge new tools or libraries as topics—and I'm not up on any of those to share.

Hi Jonathan,

I think there is room for basics.  While basic loops and branching might be a bit too simple, a talk on some of the primitives that set Ruby apart could be helpful.  Just off the top of my head, blocks, lambdas and procs are those sorts of things.  A talk on idiomatic Ruby would be nice as well.  Also, I'm personally always interested in seeing the application of design patterns, especially when tied to the real world - "this is how I used X to solve Y!".

But really, anything.  We all work with Ruby to some degree, some full-time some as a hobby.  We also all work with it differently.  I learn the most from watching other people code and discuss Ruby.  There is always _something_ that I take away and incorporate into my own work.

Does that help at all?  Any ideas on what you might want to talk about?

Best,

Michael

If you find something cool, odds are good that others will to.  Aim for that.

20 minutes is a very short period of time.  You don't have time to go into much depth at all.  You could look at just about anything that interests you for a couple of hours and have plenty of material.  That's all you're really doing, offering to be the one who disemminates some information down to the group.

OK, today I was really blown away with what we were able to pull off with generating complex queries via ActiveRecord relations plus custom SQL. We've been pushing into more complex uses of AR for a while on this project, but today I saw even more power there than I had realized. Arel is amazing, and AR wraps it in a package that's pretty awesome in itself.

I would love to share about some of this magic. Maybe our client would even let us use his app as my conceptual example—it's always work coming up with good examples.

I could easily fill an hour with this stuff (given proper prep), but can abbreviate it as needed.

As someone who doesn't care for active record, I would be really interested in this... Specifically Arel.  Would you be interested in the December slot?
