Hey everyone,

It has been a while since we have been able to get together and there is a plan to change that. Starting October 10th, we are going to be meeting the 2nd Thursday of each month - 11:30 - 12:30 at The Exchange.

In October, Jeremy Green is going to be showing us how valuable Rabl can be as a "view layer" for json api apps.
We are also planning to have a 15 minute VPS cage match between Digital Ocean and Linode. The match will be officiated by Michael Gorsuch.

The lovable Octocats of Github are going to be sponsoring this meeting and providing lunch so the only thing required from you is to show up and learn.

We have funding, location and topics lined up through the end of 2013 and we humbly ask that you come join in the learning and community building with us. We will be providing more information as the event gets closer. If you have issues with the meeting time, topic suggestions or really anything - respond and let us know so we can shape our community together.

Hope to see you there,
{Jeremy Green, Michael Gorsuch, Rob Sullivan}

Great to see this community coming back to life. I will try to make a trip to one of these.

Until I can, could you all try doing a Google Hangout for the event? The Upfront Wichita guys say it works well for them. I'm happy to be the guinea pig for October 10.

Thanks,
-L

Yeah, we'll do the Google Hangout so we can record as well.  This'll be fun.

Hi there:

A few questions - what is the 'exchange' and where is it located?

since you are doing google hangouts does that mean we can connect from offsite if we cant make it to the meeting?

thanks
Ryan

Hi Ryan,

The Exchange is located here - http://www.exchangeokc.com/

The Google Hangout is super experimental.  I have no idea if we'll really be able to pull it off for the first meeting or not, so I don't want to set expectations that it will work reliably at all.  In the future, I'd love for that to be the case - anyone who couldn't make it onsite could either watch remotely live or pick up the youtube video afterwards.

Let me know if that helps.

Best,

Michael

I moderate a community on G+ and host weekly hangouts. If I can help pull that off in any way, I'd be happy to help. I think hangouts is a fantastic way to include people who would otherwise be unable to attend.

I'm less optimistic about how well this will work.  This will be a room full of people talking.  It takes an awesome mic to make that sound even halfway decent and that's just covering sound alone.

I'm more concerned with us spending energy to make the meeting great as a first step.

That's just my two bits.

Yeah, sound-wise is may not be fantastic. I hadn't thought about that. I will see if I can come up with a workable solution in time for the meeting.

Thanks Jon!  I'd love to hear about what you come up with.  I wouldn't stress, as we'll likely learn a lot about room layout, etc in the first meeting that could feedback into this.  A good remote experience is hard to craft.  Maybe we can't get there in the near term, but perhaps we can figure out a way to at least start recording our presentations within a few meetings.

So excited about all of this.

Yo Luke, sorry brother, but unless someone shows up with some last minute awesome we're gonna have to skip on the Hangout today.  We've got a large attendee list and I think we're all just scrambling to make sure the basic event goes smoothly.  I'm still _very_ interested (as I know many others are, too) to get these things recorded.  We're just gonna need to get through this one first and get a feel for how it might work.

Best,

Michael

And for a little more transparency... Jon Ownbey is very much taking up the flag for this.
We'll be working with him over the next month and hangout/broadcast option should be featured in the 13.11 release of okcruby.

I'm sitting at i2E in Tulsa ready to test a Google Hangout and/or YouTube stream if someone wants to fire it up.
