CHATHAM COUNTY

 

 

LGBTQIA+ Health: Register now for the Savannah Pride Center’s 2nd Annual LGBTQIA+ Health Summit, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, March 6, at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Arena, 301 W. Oglethorpe. Car show: Woodbine Lions Club hosts 9th annual Camp for the Blind Car Show from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at Georgia Lions Camp, Laura Walker Road in Waycross. Displays include cars, motorcycles, crafts. Registration is $20 for vehicles; spectators pay $5 per adult. Children younger than 12 admitted free.

Women of Valor: American Legion JE Lanier Post 27 presents the 2nd Annual Women of Valor Ignite Brunch 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, March 7 at Waterford Landing Clubhouse, 731 Waterford Landing Rd., Richmond Hill. For female veterans, female active-duty service members, military spouses, and military daughters across Greater Hinesville and Savannah — “a population that often has limited access to programming created specifically with their experiences in mind.” Free; register in advance.

 

GLYNN COUNTY

 

 

Commissioner Harris appointed to serve on national council: Brunswick City Commissioner Felicia Harris was selected for the National League of Cities (NLC) 2026 Race, Equity and Leadership (REAL) Council. The one-year term will focus on developing and guiding programs that benefit communities with similar demographics, size, or location and that can be replicated nationwide.

 

Barge operations to begin March 2 for the next phase of shoreline work: During the week of March 2, crews will mobilize a construction barge to place armor stone as part of the St. Simons Island Shoreline Revetment Phase II Project. This work will be along the shoreline west of the St. Simons Island fishing pier. Construction is expected to continue for two weeks, with barge demobilization anticipated by March 13, 2026.

 

 

LIBERTY COUNTY

Run for office: Qualifying for all candidates during the 2026 General Election cycle takes place from 9 a.m. Monday, March 2, through noon Friday, March 6, at the Registration and Elections Office in the Historic Courthouse, 100 Main St., Hinesville. Up for grabs: Liberty County Board of Commissioners districts 1, 2, and 3, as well as school board chair and districts 4, 5, and 6. You’ll need qualifying fees and paperwork. Questions? Support women’s health: Diversity Health Center’s annual Go Red Gala Gospel Concert for Women’s Health featuring Kelontae Gavin happens Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Liberty County Performing Arts Center, 2140 E. Military family scholarships: Apply by Sunday, March 1, for scholarships and grants from The Marne Community and Spouses Club. These merit-based scholarships are for eligible military family members in the Ft. Stewart/Hunter Army Airfield and Low County Communities. Considerations include academic achievement, community and extracurricular involvement, essays and 2 letters of recommendation. High school seniors, trade school, college, grad school students, spouses may apply. Kids’ art classes: Register now for 8 weeks of homeschool art classes at The Robin’s Nest, 102 S. Commerce St., Hinesville. Learn about a different artist (Pollock, Kandinsky, Tiffany, Ringgold, Britto, Kusama, Thomas, Rabuzin) Thursdays, March 12 through May 7. $20 one-time supplies fee, $12 per class. MCINTOSH COUNTY

 

 

Darien Party Gras on the Coast: The day starts with morning bike rides from 100 miles to 3 miles from Vernon Square (details) and ends with a Party Crawl at 3 p.m. where visitors can explore downtown Darien from stores and restaurants. Fill a passport for a chance at prizes Party Gras on the Coast benefits the Humane Animal Resource Team and McIntosh Food Programs & Pantry and American Legion through the nonprofit McIntosh Cares.

 

 

ALONG THE COAST

 

 

Get help filing taxes: Several local groups are offering free confidential tax help from IRS-certified volunteers between now and April 15, particularly for people with low to moderate income. These include Coastal Georgia Area Community Action Authority (Bryan, Camden, Glynn, Liberty), United Way of the Coastal Empire (dial 2-1-1 for your closest VITA location), and Neighborhood Improvement Association (NIA) in metro Savannah. Servicios en español disponsible.

 

Flu shots available: Health departments in Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long, and McIntosh counties now offer updated 2025-2026 flu vaccine. Supplies are limited in some locations as vaccine shipments continue to arrive. Call your local health department to confirm availability and schedule an appointment. A yearly flu vaccine is the best way to prevent serious flu-related illness for everyone age 6 months and older. Costs are typically covered by insurance, and health departments accept many health insurance plans, and low-cost options for those without health insurance coverage. COVID shots available: The health departments in Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long, and McIntosh Counties are offering the Pfizer brand of COVID vaccine without a prescription, the Coastal Health District announced.
