TheŠkoda Rapid is a fastback coup designed and built by AZNP in Czechoslovakia between 1984 and 1990. Based on the rear-engined Škoda 105 120 and 130 saloon, it was a replacement for the Škoda Garde coupe built between 1981 and 1984 itself based upon the Škoda 105/120 sedan design, which was also called the Rapid in the UK market. Some Garde/Rapid cars were sent to Ludgate Design & Development in Kent, United Kingdom, by Škoda to be converted into convertibles.
Today the Škoda Rapid is gaining in popularity as a classic car with Garde and convertible models being most sought after. According to the website "How Many Left?", there were a total of 50 Škoda Rapids left on British roads in 2011.[2]
The Rapid name was originally used on 1930s Škoda models, and was revived again in 2011 on an Indian market Rapid saloon,[3] based on the Volkswagen Vento, and in 2012 on a Rapid hatchback for the international market.
The Rapid used a unibody structure and a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout.Front suspension was by double wishbones and coil springs. At the rear there were semi-trailing arms and coil springs, a major upgrade from the swing axle of earlier Škodas that gave safer and more predictable handling.[1] Brakes were discs with four-pot calipers at the front, and drums at the rear.
The engine was a water-cooled, carburated, OHV inline four mounted longitudinally, slanted to the right and overhanging the rear axle. Power was sent to the rear wheels through a transaxle gearbox. Engine upgrades were introduced concurrently with the analogous ones of the Škoda 130 series saloon.
In the first years of production, Škoda Rapid 120 had 1174 cc 40.5 kW (55 PS; 54 bhp) aluminium block, cast iron heads engine and four-speed gearbox carried over from its predecessor Škoda Garde. These first series were made in BAZ Bratislava and they were known for its unreliability.
A convertible version of the Rapid was offered by Škoda GB on the British market. Standard Rapid coups were imported and converted in the UK by specialist Ludgate Design & Development (LDD ltd.) in Kent, and were sold through the official Škoda dealerships.[5] The cars retained their window frames, and were reinforced with additional chassis bracing and a T-shaped rollbar similar to the Triumph Stag's. At a total price of just under 5,000, the Rapid Cabriolet was the cheapest convertible on sale in the United Kingdom.[5]
The Rapid was a sports coupe, built by Skoda in the 1980s. It was based on the 130/135/136 sedan, which in turn was based on the 105/120/125 series, which we featured in our Soviet Bloc Cars Were Weird series. The Rapid name was used in the 1930s and 1940s and was again resurrected six years ago with the launch of the affordable Rapid hatch and sedan.
A replacement for the Skoda Garde, the Rapid was introduced in 1984 and was manufactured until 1990. Many units were produced for Western Europe and UK export, but today there are less than 50 still running in Britain, according to the website
HowManyLeft.co.uk.
Being based on the 130 means the Rapid was powered by a rear-mounted engine, sending power to the rear wheels. Front suspension used double wishbones and coil springs, while brakes were discs with four-pot calipers at the front, and drums at the rear. Power was provided by two four-cylinder naturally-aspirated engines.
Then, there was the very low build quality and the poor reliability. The first series of assembled examples, wearing the Rapid 120 name, were known for its unreliability. For example, because of its complex layout featuring a radiator located on the front axle, the cooling system was very prone to airlocks, which often resulted in overheating of the engine.

Most rally fans remember Group B as the domain of powerful racing cars that reached incredible speeds for their time. But it was precisely because of these dazzling displays that a series of incidents occurred that ultimately led to the category being completely abolished. The ŠKODA 130 LR also started in Group B in the shadow of some truly fearsome supercharged models from well-known manufacturers. Despite significantly lower power output in comparison, it enjoyed great success against the competition.
The homologation of the ŠKODA 130 LR, or the testing of a series of 200 units by the International Automobile Federation (FIA), took place at the Vrchlab plant on 19 December 1984. The LR made its debut on the rally circuit as early as February of the following year, naturally with the aim of building on the many successes of its predecessor. At its very first appearance, the Valašsk zima Rally in 1985, the ŠKODA 130 LR finished in the top three places thanks to the driver teams Křeček/Motl, Haugland/Bohlin and Kvaizar/Janeček. The ŠKODA 130 LR scored its first major international success at the famous British RAC Rally at the end of 1985, where the Norwegian driver, John Haugland finished 15th overall.
The next big triumph came the following year at the Acropolis Rally, one of the toughest rallies in the world. The duo Ladislav Křeček/Bořivoj Motl won their class and finished 13th overall. They even managed to top this result at the 1986 San Remo Rally, when they placed sixth overall. The greatest success was the victory of the Austrian driver team Gerhard Kalnay/Gnter Tazreiter in the overall classification of the Marlboro Gnaydin Turkish Rally. In this European Championship round, the ŠKODA 130 LR far outpaced the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16, the Audi Quattro, the MG Metro 6R4, the Renault 5 Turbo and other strong vehicles in the field.
Given the boisterous nature of amateur rallies, very few of the several hundred 130 LR cars built (including 200 homologation vehicles, 20 race cars and an unknown number of vehicles modified to 130 LR specifications) have survived to this day. Owing to the increasing interest in rally cars from the 1980s, the original 130 LR factory cars are now in great demand among collectors and are traded at correspondingly high prices.

This is a modernization of the high-quality model 100/110, which, however, due to limited possibilities, was only partially carried out and therefore this model still has the engine in the back. The first vehicle of the 120L type was presented for the first time at the car fair in Brno in 1976. We have prepared for you a model from 1984, where the most significant difference is the angular lights and a more modern front end. The model is packed on a stand in a PVC box.
