Long ago, there was an Illustrator filter for Okapi.
Since the new Java implementation, that filter wasn't replaced.

Are there any plans to add .ai among the supported file formats?

All existing options (that basically reduce to SysFilter and a few custom scripts) aren't great.

Thanks in advance,

Marco

Barring someone with a huge need for this who wants to implement this themselves (or hire someone to build it), I think this is unlikely. AI files are basically raw postscript, which is a difficult format to work with, although it is probably possible using third-party libraries (possibly to convert it to PDF -- for which our support is still limited).

The easiest solutions I've seen for Illustrator involve exporting as SVG instead.

There is a script for that, that you can find on Adobe fora, where you select all text boxes, load all the contents in variables, export the variables to an XML file, translate that and load the translated values into the file to obtain a translated file.

The result is very nice. I've translated such AI files to dozens of languages without issues.

I've found a couple of them on Github, but they failed when I tried them.

I also found this on the Illustrator forum, but I don't see a link to a final script:

Finally, this one seems to not be there anymore (the zip file is in the author's bin, apparently):

Do you have a link to the script(s) you used?

No, it's an older thread. It looks like this one would work, though.

But there is no need to use the script to do anything else but assign values to the variables really.

Importing back is just done by manually loading the translated XML file.

Also, there are plenty of AI specialists who'll be more than happy to provide you with handcrafted solutions that fit your workflow.
