And who can forget Linda Soundtrack?
Richard
Heheh, Linda Soundtrak. I don't know if you guys in Tulsa have Multimedia
Cablevision or not, but recently in Oklahoma City Multimedia celebrated
their anniversary sale by bringing back Linda Soundtrak as their temporary
spokeswoman! There she was, annoying as ever.... I found it quite
nostalgic. I remember they used to have some of the funniest Christmas
commercials.
Anyway, she lives somewhere east of here now, maybe Tennessee or Kentucky,
and has since sold Soundtrak to another company. Her "Baby Sluggo" is now
in college by the way.
Rumor has it she may be coming back to Oklahoma airwaves as a car salesman.
Guess we'll have to wait and see.
We could only be so lucky. :-)

I was pretty close to it... Thanks for spoiling things for me.
Who can forget such an annoying voice as that?
Well I'm sure I'll humiliate myself by telling everyone this, but....
If you go to http://www.oklahoma.net/~heyrick/index.htm\
and click ok the animated fishbowl in the upper left corner, you will
have the option of downloading a WAV file of Linda Soundtrack's
Multimedia Cablevision ad from this fall in OKCity (317KB). I'm
ashamed, but I couldn't help it -- I'm big on nostalgia.

Actually, you have Oklahoma City to thank for Linda. Soundtrak was
an OKC-based company that expanded up here. She works in marketing in
Atlanta nowadays, but an OKC radio station (KATT, I think) has her
doing bumps for them. I almost crashed my car on the Lake Hefner
Parkway recently while on the way to my parent's when I heard that
voice coming out of my radio.
KRC
That's what it was from! I heard it on the radio, and I thought it
was some kind of bump - I heard about 3 seconds of that voice and
switched stations.

No Multimedia here - just the TCI juggernaut. Her Christmas
commericals were funny only if you were really, really drunk.

While we're at it, can we resurrect those two old hicks from Jude 'n
Jody - "Where we love folks!" and the man responsible for unleashing
the Mathis Brothers on the world - Bud Mathis and his horrid attempts
at country music? What about Harris Ford - "your cheeper dealer" and
their wonderful jingle about "talking turkey for chiken shit" or
whatever it was? Or Southwest Ford - I know the guy died in that
Delta crash at DFW in '85 - but with all the computer technology out
there, we could bring him back to life.

I'm already undergoing withdrawl from those "Swinson Chevrolet -
Super!" commercials. Fortunately, I have those Riverside
Neeeeeeeessssssaaaaaaannnnn commercials to tide me over - and Modell
Phipps.
KRC
It's not as old (I think early 80s), but I liked watching Sherman Oaks on
23 with Mr. Pickle. Remember the ads where Sherman tried to pick up on the
hot babe "hey, be back for you later!" while he's driving by.... then he
figures out "hey, that was a GUY!"
And then the 4th of July show where they took firework tanks and had them
attack the ORU campus made of postcards?
funny stuff... but it's probably lost it's luster. I liked speed racer
cartoons as a kid too - and saw a few on MTV a couple of years back. They
sucked.
Pete
Oh my gosh, that's right, I remember hearing about that guy dieing. I think
the phrase was "talking turkey for chicken scratch" or something like that.
Okay, here's another one.... Does anyone remember those "Steak Sandwich
Supreme" commercials that Del Rancho used to air back in the 80's? The one
with the little kid in the cowboy hat walking into some saloon....

Modell Phipps used to drive a Jaguar... Don't know if he still does or not. He
sure looks alot younger than he sounds... <G>

Yeah, but we have "Roy Dam Mercer", the guy that's famous for his "ass

That's okay, I heard enough of him back when I used to work days.
Him and that annoying trio on 104.5. Now, if I'm around at that hour,
I usually listen to Erling.

I don't recall ever seeing him drive a Honda. As far as the age goes, I think
he lied to get Social Security earlier... <G>

Let's see... You go from Roy Dam Mercer to 104.5 (Hate that station), to
Erling? Can't exactly follow you there. I'll take Roy and the prank calls over
the others anytime. KMOD has been a favorite of mine for close to 20 years.
Now, if they'd just play the true classics, like they used to...

The tunes have little to do with it - that's why I have a tape
player in the car. I like a lot of different things from "classic
rock" to what 104.5 plays, to Star 103, to 101.5 - I don't limit my
musical tastes to one era or genre. There's good music everywhere if
one only takes the time to listen. My dad's a great example -
probably one of the few guys you'll find who's CD collection includes
Lynyrd Skynrd, Buddy Holly, Nirvana, Guns 'N Roses, Stevie Ray Vaughn,
Etta James, and Handel. I don't limit my tastes to any one genre, and
I don't think there's anything that one can call a "true classic" -
rock 'n roll wise - without entering into a debate over genres. There
was shit coming out in the 1960's and 1970's, just as there is today.
Whether one wants to come out from under their self-imposed cloak and
seek out good new music is one's choice.
That being said, I listened to Erling more because he doesn't try to
be funny and KRMG has the best traffic reports.

Harris Ford (the "Chicken" people) were different than Southwest.
Southwest's slogan was "That's incredible - no, that's Southwest
Ford." The SW Ford pitchman who died in 1985 plane crash was Curtis
Schwartz, I went to high school with his kid. IIRC, The Daily
Disappointment and the TV stations all reported his death.
>Okay, here's another one.... Does anyone remember those "Steak Sandwich

Back in the '80's? Hell, that commercial dates to the 1970's! My
family moved back to the OKC area in 1977 after we were stationed in
Germany while my Dad was in the Army. I remember those commercials
from when we lived in the Indian Creek apartments at 122nd and May
just after we came back. The kid's walking into a Del Rancho, and
orders the sandwich, and - IIRC, as he's leaving another patron says
something like "I'll have what he's having..." I remember it because,
at the time, I was about the same age as the kid in the commercial and
my friends and I all made fun of it. We used to open the fence gates
on our respective patios with toy guns at our side and announce we
wanted the "Steak Sandwich Supreme."
You know, I've never had the "Steak Sandwich Supreme." It might be
a hell of a sandwich. There used to be a Del Rancho across from the
Admin building at UCO (CSU when I was there) in Edmond, and although I
ate there several times, I never got the nerve up to ask for THE
sandwich. I always felt I should impersonate that kid in ordering it
- my friends and I used to try and convince each other to walk in like
the kid and order the sandwich, and despite lots of beer, nobody ever
did. The Del Rancho is a Domino's now, IIRC.
On another note, they're STILL using that commercial. I was back in
OKC for a short-term work deal in September and crashed at my parent's
place. Watching either 25 or 34 late one night, I saw that commercial
again - cheap ad time, I guess! I couldn't believe it, but it was the
VERY SAME commercial - you could tell from all the scratches in the
film (shot on real film stock instead on videotape) and the clothes of
the patrons. AFAIK, the only Del Rancho's left in the area are down
in Capitol Hill on SW 29th and up in Guthrie on Division.
Anyway, thanks for bringing up some great memories,
KRC
P.S. - anyone remember the Zuider Zee commercials circa 1970? My
parents appeared in one for some extra cash when my Dad was in Med
school. All I remember about those places is that they were shaped
like a windmill. I know they became Der Dutchman later and then
reverted to the original name. IIRC, there was one near Baptist
Hospital where On the Border is now and one on Penn just south of
Hefner. I think there was also one on the South Bypass (I-240 - I'm
dating myself - nobody still uses the names for freeways in OKC
anymore) at either May or Penn.
Not that I personnally remember it, but I believe the car bashing commercial
was "Tink don't care". Also there used to be a band that played the John Chick
show some mornigs - the Arnolds. i went to school with their drummer - Kenny
Arnold

Ouch...I vaguely remember that one, all right. How many cars got totaled in
the making of those commercials, anyway? One thing I'm sure of -- it had
"Ugh! U need um TIRES?" beat by a mile...:-)

Yeah, not many left. I grew up on the south side down there, and there is
actually still one or two left scattered around S. Penn. I think there's
still one in Mustang also. I never understood why they didn't do better, I
always thought they had great food.
>Anyway, thanks for bringing up some great memories,
Sure.

Were those locally owned? Such a shame to see local business die away.
Okay, here's another OKC-flashback for you. Do you remember "Count Gregor"
and his "scarry" midnight movies on channel 43?
Yeah, that ones a classic too. I think it was 524-4541? "Accidents and
tickets too, call Paul Mead we'll take care of you, 524-4541....."
Heheh. I have actually seen that one once about 1-2 years ago during late
night TV.
Old commercials never die I suppose, they just fade away into late night
programming.
No, no, no! It's Riversiiiiiiiide NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNissan! But don't
forget that wonderful Doug Hickey, I could just slap him! It was bad
enough when they were advertising their OKC location......
524-1541
Damn. Now I can't get to sleep...

them was my 7th grade English teacher until she married one of the owners of
the store.

Oh yeah. He always reminded me of that lame "Vampire" movie host
Joe Flaherty used to play on SCTV. I remember he had competition from
"Uncle Murph's Playhouse" on 34. Uncle Murph used to get away with a
lot, I guess because his show aired so late and his bosses weren't
watching. One gag that I still can't believe they got away with was
Uncle Murph's "microphone" - it was a dildo - not anatomically
correct, but you could tell quite easily what it was.
KRC
I am not familiar with those commercials. Bestshot was not that outragous
really. Just a good looking woman lounging around on watebeds, that sort of
thing.
Talk to you next time.....if not sooner.
