The U.S.
Department of Defense is the world's leading consumer of petroleum, sucking up
about 340,000 barrels of oil every day, more than the total national consumption
of Sweden or Switzerland. U.S. combat operations in Southwest Asia alone use
more oil than the 150 million citizens of Bangladesh.
A recent study conducted for the Department of
Defense concludes that U.S. global military strategy is “unsustainable”
from an energy perspective due to rising energy prices and the looming oil peak.
Will the Pentagon go green, and maintain its expansionary and preemptive
policies by relying on a more “sustainable” energy base, or will
it continue to transform itself into a “global oil-protection
service”.
