ARCHBISHOP TUTU SLAMS US CLIMATE POLICY: CALLS FOR AN END TO OIL AID:
In the run-up to last week's G8 meeting in Germany, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, scholar and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, made a passionate plea for the US to take responsibility for its contribution to climate change. Among other things, Archbishop Tutu called on wealthy countries to stop using foreign assistance to subsidize international oil companies.

JUBILEE ACT ON DEBT CANCELLATION INTRODUCED IN THE US CONGRESS: CALLS FOR SHIFT AWAY FROM OIL DEPENDENCE:
The 2007 Jubilee Act for Responsible Lending and Expanded Debt Cancellation (HR 2634) was introduced in the United States House of Representatives last week. The Act focuses on the need to expand debt cancellation, but it also expresses support for “the development of responsible financing standards where creditors and aid/loan recipients alike adhere to standards to assure transparency and accountability to citizens, human rights, and the avoidance of new odious debt, while encouraging the development of renewable energy and helping countries to transition away from dependence on oil.”

COPING WITH CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE NIGER DELTA:
Nigeria's Community Research and Development Centre (CREDC) released a study last week on the impacts of climate change in the Niger Delta and the adaptation strategies that the people of the Niger Delta are adopting.
The study, entitled: “Coping with Climate Change and Environmental Degradation in the Niger Delta of Southern Nigeria”, suggests ways to strengthen the existing capacity of the people to adapt to climate change and adverse environmental changes. The research also highlights in detail the climatic and environmental changes that have occurred in the Niger Delta region and shows the relationship between these changes and poverty.
