There is a lot of confusion around the renewal dates for youth protection training in "Scouting America" - can you explain ?
The confusion around renewal dates in
Scouting America stems from a major 2025 policy shift that transitioned from a two-year renewal cycle to a mandatory annual renewal cycle. This change accompanied the replacement of the old Youth Protection Training (YPT) with the new Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT).

Key Renewal Requirements
Annual Requirement: All registered adult volunteers must now take Safeguarding Youth training every year.
Initial vs. Refresher: The first time you take SYT, it is a full 90-minute course. In subsequent years, you only need to complete a 15-20 minute refresher and retest to remain current.
The "Hard" Deadline: All volunteers, regardless of when they last took the old YPT, must complete the new SYT by May 31, 2026.

Transition from Old YPT
The expiration of your old YPT certification depends on its original date:
If YPT expires before May 31, 2026: Your certification remains valid only until its original expiration date. You must take the new SYT before that date to stay registered.
If YPT expires after May 31, 2026: Your expiration date has been "reset." You must take the new SYT by the May 31, 2026 deadline.
