Identifying Civil War Photographs by Ancestors

This is a two-three part question.  There are so many photographs of individuals in the civil war, both identified and unidentified.  Has there been any effort or initiative to identify the individuals in those unidentified photos or to match photographs that are identified with descendants now living.  For example, my great great grandfather was part of Company G of the 148th Ohio National Guard.  We have a photograph of him in his 50s, but none from when he was a young man.  Would there be photographs of Company G of the 148th Ohio National Guard?
