Hello~
My great great grandfathers name was Simon Jacobs.
I researched the national archives and found that he tried to get a pension and failed after the war.

He claimed to have served in the H71 infantry from June- Sep of 1864.
He claims he served under Captain George Kenersin.
He had friends write him letters of support on his behalf in 1908, but the Pension Dept could not find records confirming his military service.
He claims he was drafted June 15, 1864 in Salina ,Ohio.

Any help appreciated! thanks!

Hello,

I checked the roster of the 71st Ohio Infantry - I assume that is what you meant by "H71".  There is no George Kenersin in that regiment nor does one show up on the Soldiers and Sailors Database online.  Additionally, I could not find a "Simon Jacobs' In the 71st Ohio although there were three others with that last name, none of whom came in during 1864.

Did you mean Celina, Ohio by chance?  Some of the 71st did come from there including Captain Leblond.  There is a street in the town named for him that my mother and father used to live on.

thanks Greg!
It may well be Celina. My info is from the national archives. They have a letter from Simon asking for a military pension.  They also have many letters from relatives and friends writing letters in support too.
As far as George Kenersin...the spelling of that may be way off too.
Hard to believe my great great grandfather was making the whole thing up.
Thanks Paul
